Test gets even tougher for Campbell

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

With Campbell in such a slump, it’s easy to forget what coach Amosa Amosa has done in Ewa Beach. The Sabers are 0-2 in the OIA Blue and fighting with rival Kapolei to stay out of the cellar. All they have to do to avoid that fate is beat unbeaten Kailua. Ouch. But it certainly can be done. Amosa has never lost to the Surfriders, instantly ending Kailua’s five game winning streak when he took over. How much of a […]

There’s a faint breeze here at John Kauinana Stadium. In other words, it’s a chilly place to be compared to the rest of the island, where temperatures got a high as 93 degrees (I was at ‘Iolani shooting video earlier) and humidity.. HUMIDITY? Awful today. Mililani beat Campbell in the earlier JV game. Varsity kickoff is set for 7 p.m. FIRST QUARTER The Trojans’ first series is drenched by rain and Vavae Malepeai commits a rare fumble, recovered by Campbell […]

Campbell’s Ramos back in football mode

By Billy Hull on August 19, 2015

Campbell junior Markus Ramos spent 43 days away from home this past summer. Trust me when I say it was worth it. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver on the Sabers football team got noticed on the mound pitching for the Trosky Baseball traveling team. Despite throwing only “eight or nine” innings for the eventual state champion Sabers baseball team in the spring, Ramos was impressive enough early in the summer to draw attention from a host of Division I colleges. One […]

Amosa, Campbell want a ‘bonding like no other’

By Nick Abramo on June 4, 2015

SIXTH IN A SERIES ON SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES ON OAHU School pride has been soaring at Campbell for a few years due to the success of its athletic teams. In the recently finished school year, it really took off. The baseball and softball team won the Division I state titles last month within the span of a week; in the winter, the girls soccer team won the OIA championship and made it deep into the state tournament; and last fall, […]

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2015

Punahou all-state offensive lineman Semisi Uluave signed a letter of intent with the University of California at Berkeley this morning at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance ceremony. Uluave, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound senior, opted for Cal over several other programs, including Oregon. “I felt like Cal is the best fit for me, and it’s the No. 1 public university in the country, in the world,” he said. The multi-talented Laie resident did not mention if he will go on an two-year […]

Matautia to join Hawaii

By Jerry Campany on January 11, 2015

Two time Star-Advertiser first teamer Solomon Matautia is staying home. Matautia, a safety from Campbell, switched from Oregon State to Hawaii according to his Twitter account. Here is a snippet from the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai from his story in tomorrow’s paper: The past June, Matautia made an oral commitment to play for Oregon State. Still, Hawaii, Washington and Colorado pursued Matautia. This past September, Oregon State held off UH at Aloha Stadium. Matautia attended that game, and although he was […]
