LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis 60, Moanalua 53, F

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2015

Might be the best matchup of the night — Mid-Pacific/Kailua title game at the Surfrider Holiday Classic withstanding. This is the fourth day of the James Alegre Invitational. The final game. Saint Louis is 3-0 so far in the tourney. Moanalua has one loss, to No. 1 Punahou. Moanalua and Saint Louis are unranked. I suppose that could change very soon. I’ve yet to see the Crusaders, guided by first-year head coach Allan Silva, so this is going to be […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 57, Honokaa 34, F

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2015

The Division-II Honokaa Dragons have played well in tournament and exhibition games on Oahu this week. A win over D-I Mililani, which features superb athlete Kalakaua Timoteo, would be another feather in the cap. FIRST QUARTER Mililani’s 2-3 zone is effective enough. The Dragons are finding creases and trying bounce passes, but aren’t able to finish. Their center, Spencer-Herring (sp) is out with two fouls. Isaac Liva, Mililani’s 6-foot-4 senior, has four points so far. He’s going to add a […]

LIVE BLOG: #10 Lunas 58, Radford 38, F

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2015

The second varsity game of the day at the James Alegre Invitational, day four, pits No. 10 Lahainaluna against host Radford. FIRST QUARTER 9-0 run by Lahainaluna has opened the lead to 15-5 with 1:45 left. Nice execution by the Lunas against Radford’s 2-3 zone. Quarter ends with the Lunas ahead 19-9. SECOND QUARTER More excellent execution by the Lunas. Radford switched to man defense, but the Lunas do a nice job on ball reversal and entry lobs to the […]

LIVE BLOG: #2 Buffanblu 66, Govs 39, F

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2015

Day four of the James Alegre Invitational boys basketball tournament is underway. A JV game between host Radford and Aiea began the day at noon. It was a rearranged schedule that allowed for the JV game, and Honokaa’s previously scheduled noon game was moved to 5 p.m. No. 2 Punahou played at Farrington earlier in the week, on Monday, and won 59-30 (if I remember right). The Buffanblu are a bit young, but very talented and cohesive. They play like […]

LIVE BLOG: Jr. ‘Bows 64, Tigers 50, F

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2015

Final game of the night on day two of the Hawaii Self Storage Black and Gokd Classic pits University against host McKinkey. The Junior Rainbows have just eight in uniform but they’re a cohesive bunch from what I saw at Kalani’s summer league. The Tigers will be playing without Dan Villejo, their leading scorer last season. He is back from a knee injury but hasn’t been cleared to play yet. Starting guard Kyle Moraga is also not playing. FIRST QUARTER […]

LIVE BLOG: #4 Maryknoll 49, #8 Kahuku 41, F

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2015

Game of the night? Could be. I don’t expect Kahuku’s football guys to be sharp after finishing their championship season just two weeks ago. But Maryknoll saw leading scorer Justice Sueing Jr. transfer out. Brian Washington, their 6-foot-6 sophomore, has a chance to shine. Kahuku appears to have no Kiwis on the team this season. FIRST QUARTER Technical foul on Kahuku during warmups for dunking. Quarter ends with MS up 11-10. They were in a matchup zone the whole quarter. […]

LIVE BLOG: Kaimuki 56, Kapolei 48, F

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2015

The second game of the day tips off in a few minutes. No. 5 Kamehameha edged Kalani 65-59 in the first game. FIRST QUARTER Ragged play and a lot of missed open shots for both teams. Sifo Lauvao hit a 22-foot trey to bring the Bulldogs within 12-11 going into the second stanza. SECOND QUARTER Hurricanes are destroying Kaimuki on the offensive glass. Coach Greydon Espinda is imploring his Bulldogs to box out, but so far they aren’t listening. Lauvao […]

LIVE BLOG: #5 Kamehameha 65, Kalani 59, F

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2015

This is day two of the Hawaii Self Storage Black and Gold Classic at McKinley. We’ve been grinding away at All-State Football stuff all week, so it’s catch-up time for this Pupule. I came here expecting Kalani against Kamehameha’s Division II (technically, I-AA) team. But because another school (Campbell) pulled out of the tourney, Kamehameha has both its D-I and D-II teams in the tourney, so that’s where I got a little mixed up. So, it’s Kamehameha’s D-I program — […]
