By Paul Honda on December 17, 2016

Some post-game thoughts now that we’re eight games into the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. Dr. Phillips (Fla.) looked reasonably solid in a 59-38 win over Waiakea to start today’s games. They’re always solid, athletic and one of the better teams in America. Are they up to the level of Oak Hill (101-28 winner over Kapolei) or Findlay Prep (89-39 over Mid-Pacific)? That’s probably an unfair question. What’s more important is this: If the Panthers play their best game every night, can […]

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2016

Eleven games into the season, former Moanalua point guard Marcus Keene is still on fire. Since we last checked, the junior transfer from Youngstown State has scored 31 points against Green Bay, 36 against William & Mary, 31 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 40 against Green Bay and 25 against Illinois. Punahou still No. 1, St. Francis climbs to 5th

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

Boys hoops is deeper than it has been in some time. The girls side has roughly 12-14 competitive teams, and by that I mean, teams that play sound basketball and can beat each other, given the right circumstances and a bit of peak performance. The boys side is much less predictable, with around 16-18 teams in a generally separate echelon. Here’s a look at today’s Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 along with my ballot positions of each team. 1. Punahou […]
