Ng’s 20 points spark St. Francis over Kaimuki

Kameron Ng scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter as St. Francis outmatched Kaimuki 76-42 on Monday night at the Pete Smith Classic. Jett Tanuvasa added 12 points and Bryce Nishida chipped in 11 points. Sophomore Nalu Kanalulu added 10 points for the defending Division II state champion Saints. Miller cleared to play for Kapolei until Dec. 11

Kapolei junior Jalen Miller had his temporary restraining order extended on Tuesday, allowing him to practice and play for the team until his suit is heard on Dec. 11. Miller’s family recently sued schools superintendent Christina Kishimoto and the Oahu Interscholastic Association over the league’s transfer rule. He played basketball for Mililani last year under a geographic exception when his father worked in that community. Kahuku transfer Smith signs with WKU

Galen Tolu Smith III, who is from Mississippi and transferred to Kahuku this year to play basketball, signed a letter of intent last week to play for Western Kentucky, according to the school’s website. According to sources who live on the North Shore, Smith moved to Hawaii from Mississippi in the fall and is living with David Te’o, who has been an assistant football coach at the school. Ex-Mililani hoopster sues DOE, OIA on transfer rule

Two years plus after the Oahu Interscholastic Association implemented its landmark transfer rule, there is a challenger. The parents of Mililani basketball player Jalen Miller have filed suit against the OIA and Department of Education, seeking a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order. The hearing will be held on Nov. 14 in First Circuit Court before Judge Dean E. Ochiai. Montverde (Fla.) Academy, which features ESPN’s No. 1 recruit in the class of 2018, 6-foot-7 small forward R.J. Barrett, is one of seven mainland schools that will compete in the 16-team ‘Iolani Classic next month. Barrett, who recently reclassified from the class of 2019 to ’18, is originally from Ontario, Canada, and holds scholarship offers from Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan and UCLA among others. Former Kahuku star Daniel Fotu has given an oral commitment to play basketball at Saint Mary’s, a source from Hawaii confirmed today. Last winter, Fotu, a 6-foot-7 forward who lives in New Zealand, enrolled at Kahuku after the start of basketball season, spent the three months of basketball season in Hawaii and led the Red Raiders to the Division I state championship before moving back to New Zealand.
