By Jerry Campany on April 30, 2015

OIA champion Campbell received the top seed in the Division I Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State championships beginning May 6. The Sabers, who narrowly beat Mililani for the OIA title, play the winner between Maui and Moanalua in the second round at Les Murakami Stadium. ILH champion Mid-Pacific earned the second seed and will meet either Waiakea or Kailua. Baldwin is the third seed as the MIL champion and gets the winner between OIA powers Mililani and Pearl City. Michael Hooper struck out four batters and pitched a two-hitter in 4-0 shutout of Maui in the MIL baseball overall championship game Wednesday at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku. Nawai An Yen went 3-for-3 with a triple and he scored twice to lead the Bears to the win that clinched a seeded berth in the upcoming state tournament. The Sabers’ Parker Maxwell took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings.

Mind over matter: Kapihe’s masterful night

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2015

Kaiser’s 9-0 loss to Campbell in the OIA baseball semifinal round on Friday night was a demonstration of a solid, good team going up against a premier pitcher in stealth mode. Kila Kapihe was that good. The nine strikeouts with just one walk in his two-hit shutout wasn’t just good. It was mastery. And he’s been doing it all season long on a staff that includes the heart’s desire of many an MLB scout, Ian Kahaloa, and the versatile lefty, […]

Sue confident that Punahou is on the upswing

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2015

Keenan Sue loves baseball and he loves his Punahou baseball team. The first-year coach and Honolulu businessman was effervescent in talking about his club five minutes after his postgame huddle on Friday. The Buffanblu had just finished their season in a 3-1 loss to ‘Iolani in the ILH tournament. They stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings and just couldn’t get the clutch hit they were looking for. “They are hurting,” Sue, a 1997 Punahou graduate, said […]

First inning is underway at Damon Field in Manoa Valley on the campus of Mid-Pacific Institute. Sunny blue sky, puffs of white clouds and just a hint of trade winds for this ILH baseball playoff game. Both Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific won their tourney-opening games in this double-elimination format. Makoa Mau of Kamehameha and Grant Doi of MPI are the starting pitchers. The game began at precisely 4 p.m., 15 minutes ahead of schedule. First inning Matthew Yakota led off with […]

Running the table: OIA baseball playoffs

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2015

There is a minimum of mercy in the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs, which begin on Wednesday. Unlike the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, which has an automatic state-tournament berth for the regular-season winner (Mid-Pacific) and a double-elimination format in the playoffs, the OIA leaves no room for defeat. The single-elimination format rewards late-season play — the hottest teams. Wednesday’s opening round is, as usual, a play-in situation. Winners advance to the quarterfinals. Losers are done for the season. From there, it’s […]

LIVE BLOG: Campbell 4, Mililani 3, F

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2015

Game time is 45 minutes away in this showdown for the OIA West crown. As far as playoff implications go, the winner gets the top seed in the West and the loser gets the second. Either way, Campbell and Mililani will have first-round byes. Unlike the ILH, where regular-season placing can figure into the equation for a state-tournament berth, the OIA playoffs are a one-and-done deal in terms of the league championship. Quarterfinal losers can still qualify for the state […]
