Maui state champ baseball coach steps down

Maui High baseball coach Chase Corniel stepped down from his position today, according to a press release from Sabers athletic director Michael Ban. The Hawaii Baseball Group, a summer traveling team coached by former UH assistants Keith Komeiji and Chad Konishi, are 6-2 on their current trip to California. Leilehua baseball: Watanuki out, Omalza in

Spencer Omalza, a former Leilehua and Hawaii Pacific pitcher and shortstop, is the new varsity baseball coach at Leilehua. Omalza takes over for Lane Watanuki, according to new Mules athletic director Nolan Tokuda. No reason was given for the change. Watanuki is also a former Campbell baseball coach. Waipahu’s Russell to play for UH Hilo

Waipahu Kobie Russell has decided to play college baseball instead of signing with the pros. Russell, who played shortstop for the Marauders before graduating in 2017, was drafted as a catcher by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball draft last month. Arakawa out as Pearl City baseball coach

Pearl City is looking for a new baseball coach. The Chargers went 6-9 a year ago under first-year head coach Peter Arakawa, and that included a 1-2 run in the OIA Division I playoffs. They didn’t make the state tournament. Arakawa played his high school baseball at Moanalua, and he took over for Gavin Concepcion at Pearl City prior to the 2017 season. Cantillo makes MaxPreps national team

CBS MaxPreps picked Joey Cantillo to its 2017 All-American baseball team, the website announced Tuesday. Cantillo, a left-handed pitcher who led Kailua to its second straight Oahu Interscholastic Association championship, was one of 31 players to make the second team. Thirty-one players were picked to the first team. Cantillo, who is 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, recently signed with the San Diego Padres and received a signing bonus of $302,500 after he was selected in the 16th round.

Kailua left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo plans to play professional baseball and sign with the San Diego Padres, Hawaii Prep World learned via sources today. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound former Surfriders star will sign within the next few days. He was chosen by the Padres in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball Draft, the 468th overall pick. For the first time since 2000, six Hawaii high school graduates were taken in the first 20 rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft that ended Wednesday. After KJ Harrison, Ryley Widell and Tanner Nishioka were taken in the first 10 rounds on Tuesday, four more prep stars heard their names called today.
