APRIL 21, 1970: Public schools make their move

On this day in 1970, Hawaii’s public schools made a plan to even the playing field with their public school counterparts. The Interscholastic Conference of Hawaii was proposed for 1971, bringing all of the islands together under one umbrella. The plan included private schools providing they follow the rules of the organization, namely on recruiting and eligibility. APRIL 21, 1969: ILH approves spring football

On this day in 1969, the ILH passed a rule allowing football programs to practice in the spring without helmets and pads. Programs were allowed to practice for 10 consecutive days in May. The league also decided to use National Federation rules to keep it in line with the other leagues in the state. The biggest change was not allowing a defensive player to advance the ball after recovering a fumble.

HHSAA pulls plug on spring sports season

After months of optimism and chewing on different scenarios, the HHSAA made it official today: The spring sports season has ended and will not be made up. The decision scraps eight state championships, which were supposed to begin with boys volleyball and girls water polo on May 4. Judo, tennis, softball, track and field, golf and baseball all will be scrapped. APRIL 14, 2003: Joel Kawachi steps down as Moanalua coach

On this day in 2003, a pioneer of girls wrestling quit as coach to become an athletic director. Joel Kawachi, who led Moanalua to the first three state wrestling titles, is still the AD at the school. As he pointed out in the below article, Kawachi never won the OIA boys title as a coach. APRIL 6, 1973: OIA West schools refuse to play

On this date in 1973, the adults ruined it for some of the children. Leeward District Superintendent Domingo Los Banos announced that schools under his purview (Campbell, Pearl City, Nanakuli, Waipahu and Waianae) would not participate in any high school sports as long as the teacher’s strike lasts. OIA czar William Smithe had a simple solution, telling athletes at those schools that they would forfeit any games missed because of the district’s decision. ON THIS DATE: Punahou AD James Iams returns from Stanford

On this date in 1953, Punahou athletic director James Iams returned from a year at Stanford and brought word that the school is high on football prospects Allen Napoleon of Iolani and Punahou’s Donn Carswell. Iams was Punahou’s sports boss from 1946-75. He died in 1995.

ON THIS DATE: Punahou’s Roy Bohler goes ‘missing’

On this date in 1931, Punahou coach and athletic director Roy Bohler got married. That wouldn’t normally be big news, except that the bachelor didn’t tell anyone. A quick bit of journalism found out that Miss Madeleine Hallett arrived from Washington and the couple got a marriage license as soon as she got off the boat. Hawaii high school athletic directors cancel their annual meeting

The Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association’s canceled its annual meeting, organization president Deren Oshiro announced today. “Due to the public health threat posed by COVID-19, all of the accompanying financial implications, and restrictions on travel and gatherings, our executive committee has voted to cancel the 2020 HIADA Conference,” Oshiro said in a news release.
