Hawaii’s 5 high school leagues agree to stop practices

UPDATED: All leagues suspend spring sports beginning Monday

All interscholastic competition in Hawaii high school sports will be suspended indefinitely beginning Monday according to a release from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. The possible resumption of play will not be made without the HHSAA first consulting with the Hawaii State Department of Health and the Lt. Governor’s office according to the release. Bill Villa named to new post of HIADA executive director

Bill Villa has been named as the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association’s newly created position of executive director, HIADA board president Deren Oshiro announced Monday. Villa recently announced that he will be retiring from his current position of Chaminade athletic director at the conclusion of this academic year. He held that post for 12 years. Damien to play gym sports without spectators in response to coronavirus

Damien Memorial School sent out an email to parents of students today that athletic contests, specifically boys volleyball, scheduled for the school gym this semester will be played without spectators for the “forseeable future” in response to the coronavirus. Official and statistician Thomas Yoshida earns national honor

Thomas Yoshida is usually behind the scenes at Hawaii high school sporting events, and now he’s in the spotlight. Alex Kane, a Kailua athletics fixture, dies at 83

Alex Kane, who had a long and illustrious career as an athlete, coach, teacher, administrator and official, died Oct. 8 in his sleep at home. He was 83. Kane played basketball and baseball and was a two-time ILH all-star in football for Kamehameha, graduating in 1954. He then played football at the University of Utah after growing up in Nanakuli. Bryce Kaneshiro named new Aiea athletic director

Bryce Kaneshiro‘s working colors are changing. Instead of wearing red, expect to see some green in his outfits. Kaneshiro, 47, took over as the Aiea athletic director Oct. 7, replacing Blake Moritsugu, who retired. It’s a switch from his post as AD at Waialua.
