Starting date for non-contact football workouts still uncertain

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2020

Football coaches across the state are asking, and there is still no definite date for the re-start of high school football practice. All they know is, there is hope if the number of new cases of COVID-19 can decrease significantly as the state implements mass testing. There are ifs aplenty across the board. If schools reopen in October, then air riflery and bowling may be able to start on schedule. The chances are “good,” Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive […]

Hilo’s Gianna Yokoe among new stone-cold state champs in air riflery

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2019

It isn’t common, a sister and brother winning state championships. Gianna Yokoe liked that idea, so she withstood the pressure and rallied to win the girls individual title at the Civilian Marksmanship Program/HHSAA State Air Riflery Championships at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Tuesday. “I kind of liked the noise. I feed off the energy,” she said of the excitable audience during the championship round. “My brother (Guy) won in 2016. It seems unreal.” Guy made the trip to Oahu to […]

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2018

If it was easy, it would happen all the time. Mid-Pacific became the fifth on Tuesday, capturing the boys and girls team crowns today at Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. MPI’s boys took first with a score of 2,144, led by Anthony Umemoto (544), Michael Tam (536), Brandon Lum (532) and Christian Loo (532). Mid-Pacific won its […]

Kalaheo’s Marr surprises field for Air Riflery state title

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2018

At Kalaheo, air riflery doubles, sort of, as a way to sweat out any toxins. The Mustangs practice in the wrestling room, which has no windows. “It’s a sauna,” longtime co-head coach Craig Garcia said. The alternative might be to shoot outdoors, but trade winds off the slopes of the picturesque Oneawa Hills aren’t ideal. Madissyn Marr remembers her freshman year, when the team actually practiced outside. “It was good for our wind-shooting skills,” said Marr, smiling under her blue-dyed […]

Q&A: Sacred Hearts champion Dorothy Sanidad

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2018

She draws inspiration from an eclectic range of people, from family to snowboarders. Dorothy Sanidad’s path to success in air and precision riflery is unique, and perhaps not even half as dynamic as she is. The Sacred Hearts senior helped lead the Lancers — including Maile Fox, Clarissa DeSmet and Quinn Lum — to a state championship last fall, posting a total score of 2,132 at Blaisdell Center. Her tally of 544 topped her team and was fourth overall on […]

Q&A: Sacred Hearts champion Dahee Jung

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2018

Her older brothers thrived as they grew up in South Korea, but for Dahee Jung, the future was different. She left her homeland with her family and moved to Hawaii, where her brothers were born. Jung, a scholar-athlete at Sacred Hearts, feels at home with her parents, with her teammates and classmates, teachers and coaches. The pulse of island life fits her and fits her well. Jung is also the 2018 ILH precision riflery champion, and with first-team all-star teammate […]
