GAME NIGHT 10/14: ‘Iolani/Saint Louis

Seven games with major state tournament implications in most are on tap tonight on Oahu.

No. 3 Saint Louis (6-1, 5-1 ILH D-I) can clinch a spot in the Open Division of the state tournament with a win over ‘Iolani (3-6, 0-6) coupled with a Punahou win over Kamehameha. Saint Louis QB Tua Tagovailoa, who is 553 passing yards behind career state record holder Timmy Chang, set a school record with 493 passing yards in the last meeting between the two schools.

Jerry Campany took a look at the battle between coaching legends Cal Lee of Saint Louis and Wendell Look of ‘Iolani, who both rank in the top four in career wins all-time in the state of Hawaii.


HISTORY: ‘Iolani has lost 10 straight to the Crusaders since QB Jarrett Arakawa led the Raiders to a 35-30 win in 2008. Saint Louis leads 61-10-1 in the Prep Bowl and state championship eras.

Saint Louis will play the Punahou/Kamehameha winner next Friday at 7:45 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Up next for ‘Iolani is the D-I state tournament.

FOURTH QUARTER

Only drama now is whether ‘Iolani will avoid its first shutout loss since 2013. Isaac Anderson up to 60 yards rushing as he goes for 16 yards to the Saint Louis 25 with 1:54 remaining. After a delay of game, Anderson picks up 19 to the 11. Shigemura with a great catch on a ball thrown behind him for 10 yards to the 1. Anderson’s first rush attempt for the 1 is stopped by Saint Louis. Under 50 seconds. He’s stopped again and ‘Iolani calls timeout with 25 seconds left. Anderson stuffed again. Here we go. Fourth-and-goal at the 1. LB Emmit Vaiese leads the charge and Saint Louis stuffs ‘Iolani four times from the 1 to end the game.

Isaac Anderson runs for 12 yards and then 5 for ‘Iolani as a Saint Louis defenders tries to almost spear him on the ground. Easy flag for targeting. Raiders punt with 7:30 remaining.

THIRD QUARTER

Cordeiro in at QB. Final Tagovailoa numbers: 10-17, 113 yards, TD, INT; three carries, 17 yards. Third consecutive game held under 150 yards passing. The 113 passing yards are a career low. END 3.

Hinderleider gets 9 on third-and-9 to Shigemura to move the chains. Pascua runs for 7 on third-and-2 to move the chains. ‘Iolani turns it over on downs at the 39.

Crusaders start on their 30 with Tagovailoa still in the game. Chevan Cordeiro in at QB on third down. Crusaders go three-and-out.

Hinderleider at QB for ‘Iolani. Isaiah Filisi with a tackle for loss and Faatui Tuitele stops Pascua for no gain. Hinderleider’s first throw of the season is a nice one. Perfect slant to Genovia for 17 yards. He overthrows a receiver on his second attempt and ‘Iolani will punt.

Kickoff recovered by Saint Louis on its 45. Tagovailoa remains in at QB. He comes out firing with an 18-yard pass to Chandler Washington-Villanueva and then a 26-yard pass to Makoa Close for his 500th career completion. Dylan Silva caps off the drive with a 1-yard TD run.

SECOND QUARTER

‘Iolani gets the ball back with 56 seconds to go and tries to run the clock out but Saint Louis will use timeouts. Jacob Hinderleider in at QB for ‘Iolani and Isaac Anderson in at RB. HALF.

‘Iolani DB Kyler Mento drops what would have been his second INT of the game in the end zone. Fourth-and-2 and Tagovailoa scrambles for 8 yards to the 10 and a first down. Inside shovel pass is a 10-yard TD from Tagovailoa to Dylan Silva. 26-0. Tagovailoa 7-13, 59 yards, TD, INT.

‘Iolani starts with three straight runs by Pascua for a total of 19 yards. Yokogawa drops back to pass and Slade-Matautia gets the strip-sack forced fumble recovered by Nathaniel Guyette.

Third-and-4 and Yokogawa has enough time to hit Genovia for 11 yards and a first down. Rick Sandry drops what would have been a third INT for the Crusaders defense. That would have been six the other way. Second-and-7 at the 32 and DB Kama Moore grabs the deflected pass off a receiver’s hands and returns it 71 yards on the INT return for a TD. Second one of the game for Saint Louis. 19-0. 3:31.

Crusaders will start on their 25. Tagovailoa has time and uncorks a bomb about 60 yards in the air but the receiver can’t haul it in. Tagovailoa completes two short passes for a first down but then Silva carries a dogpile of Raiders 25 yards on a run but is stripped at the end and recovered by ‘Iolani.

Another three-and-out for ‘Iolani. Third tackle of game for Slade-Matautia. Yokogawa 7-15, 56 yards, 2 INT. Pascua 11 carries, 32 yards.

Saint Louis second-and-4 on the 48 and Young runs for 11 yards. Third-and-11 and Tagovailoa completes his second pass of the game. Jaymason Nunuha on the 23-yard reception. Third-and-goal at the 1 after a couple of runs. Ronson Young 1-yard TD run.

FIRST QUARTER

Raiders go three-and-out as they cant convert on third-and-1.

Mento returns the INT to the 35. ‘Iolani third-and-4 at the 29. DB Kama Moore breaks up the pass to force fourth down. ‘Iolani will go. Yokogawa gets just enough time and hits Rayden Kaneshiro for 8 yards and a first down. Yokogawa has Genovia open for a TD and just overthrows him. Next pass is late over the middle and picked off. LB Noa Purcell returns it 85 yards for a TD. 6-0 Crusaders. Extra point is no good.

Saint Louis will start on its 17. Dylan Silva in at RB and he gets the handoff for 5 yards followed by a 10-yard scramble by Tagovailoa. Late throw over the middle is picked off by Kyler Mento. Fourth straight game with an INT for Tagovailoa, longest of his career.

Raiders will start on their 30. Yokogawa picks up a first down with a 12-yard pass to Genovia. Crusaders bring a heavy blitz on third-and-6 and Yokogawa’s pass is batted down at the line of scrimmage to force a punt.

A holding call forces Second-and-23 for Saint Louis. Tagovailoa is incomplete on third down and it’s a three-and-out for the Saint Louis offense.

‘Iolani will receive. Saint Louis LB Isaac Slade-Matautia wraps up RB KJ Pascua for a loss of 1 yard on the first play after a touchback on the kickoff. Yokogawa completes his first pass to Justin Genovia who is tackled but never goes down and ends up picking up 18. Yokogawa hits Drake Shigemura for 11 yards and another first down but is then picked off by Jalen Saole.

>> ‘Iolani QB Tai-John Mizutani is “banged up” according to Raiders coach Wendell Look and will not play. Mizutani left last week’s 38-14 loss to Punahou in the first half. “If we could have played him today, we would,” Look said before kickoff. Senior Jarin Yokogawa (35-97, 360 yards, 3 TD, 6 INT) will get the start.


>> Cal Lee is not on the sideline after undergoing surgery on Monday for kidney stones. Defensive backs coach Wes Tufaga will serve as the acting head coach for the second game in a row.

    Iolani resting their staters for their run at the D1 state title. No sense get them hurt, and give reps to unknowns since they already qualify.
