The 2021 Division II state champion, Kapaa, had a 35-13 lead over Waipahu in the second quarter of the opening-round D-I battle. Paul Honda/Star-Advertiser (Nov. 12, 2022)
This was the game of the year, but then again, it seems 2022 has provided a thriller or two every single weekend.
Kapaa led 35-13 in its first Division I state-tournament appearance. Then, Waipahu made the change, moving dynamic senior Tama Uiliata from wide receiver to quarterback. Waipahu’s 49-41 victory in the opening round of the Division I bracket in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships was simply epic.
