A big weekend for both Saint Louis and Kahuku paved the way for the Crusaders and Red Raiders to take over the top two spots in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 released Monday.

The Crusaders went from having their season possibly end on Saturday night to pulling in the No. 1 ranking for the first time in four weeks following a 30-14 victory over Punahou, which saw its three-week reign at the top come to an end.

Saint Louis trailed 14-0 and was on the verge of falling behind further when Buffanblu RB Wayne Taulapapa fumbled near the goal line. The Crusaders went on to hit a 97-yard touchdown pass from QB Tua Tagovailoa to Drew Kobayashi and it was all Saint Louis from then on as the Crusaders scored the final 30 points to win comfortably.

Saint Louis received nine of the 14 first-place votes to stay in front of Kahuku, which throttled Kapolei 56-10 in the OIA quarterfinals. The Red Raiders earned the other five first-place votes to jump to its highest spot in the rankings all season at No. 2. Kahuku was listed either first and second on all but one ballot, which had the Red Raiders third.

Punahou dropped to No. 3 but remained ahead of defending state champion Mililani, which was fourth for the third straight week. Mililani beat Moanalua 48-13 in the OIA quarterfinals with freshman Dillon Gabriel getting the majority of the work at quarterback. Trojans RB Vavae Malepeai went over 200 yards for the second straight game and is officially on record watch toward becoming the all-time leading rusher in Hawaii high school history.

Malepeai passed Damien’s Kama Bailey for fourth on the all-time list and is 63 yards away from reaching 4,000 in his career. He currently trails the record holder, ‘Iolani’s Joe Igber, by 491 yards.

Kamehameha, which beat ‘Iolani 39-24 despite giving up an ILH Division I record 485 yards passing to Raiders QB Tai-John Mizutani, held on to the fifth spot ahead of Waianae, which is sixth.

Farrington jumped to No. 7 followed by a first this season. Two Division II teams are ranked for the first time as Kapaa moved up to No. 8 and Radford debuted in the top 10 at No. 9. The Rams are 10-0 this season and are giving up an average of only 4.6 points per game after locking up a Division II state tournament berth with a 23-6 win over Waialua. Radford will get Kaimuki in the OIA D-II title game in two weeks.

Kailua edged Kapolei for the No. 10 spot.

    Manoa,
    one question who cries the most about refs?
    every week its the Refs this and the Refs that. Nuff said.

    @ManoaRainbow
    I challenge you to find one “hateful” post that I have made. Go, on. Use your investigative skills. Plus…I thought Pouha was my Representative. I nevah see your name on the ballot.

  7. ManoaRainbow October 20, 2015 2:15 pm

    You are the first post on this topic and you whine of ILH bias! As if other teams are not deserving of their hard work?

    The real Kahuku fans are at the games, I bet you haven’t even attended one Kahuku game live cause if you did you would understand that the battles take place on the field not on your keyboard – I been to two Kahuku games and sat on the Red side and I tell you the real Kahuku fans are passionate, lively and fun.

    So out of respect for the boys on both sides of the field who are getting concussed, sprains, broken bones, Just chill and be positive or go to the games and vent your frustrations in the sea of red.

    btw.. Feki dont know nawtin!

  8. Realistic October 20, 2015 2:28 pm

    I wonder what are the GPA’s, SAT, and ACT scores for each student athlete playing football at Kahuku. I also wonder how many AP classes each of them take if they are juniors or seniors. Is that public record or is it protected by FERPA?

  9. Realistic October 20, 2015 2:31 pm

    @ Good Story….do yoiu have any data that will prove there is an ILH bias? WHen I look at this poll I see 3 ILH teams and 6 OIA teams. An argument could be made that there is an OIA bias here since more teams are represented here. Please elaborate with evidence to prove your point sir.

  10. Good Story October 20, 2015 2:32 pm

    @ManoaRainbow
    If that’s your definition of hateful…then you’re the biggest hypocrite. Let’s get this straight, you hating my opinion doesn’t make it hateful…crybaby. See, that’s hateful. Kind of.

  11. Good Story October 20, 2015 2:43 pm

    @Realistic
    I’ll humor you. Let’s keep this in context as well. My comment was that I couldn’t believe that neither Kahuku nor Mililani made #1. If not, Kahuku…why not Mililani? I simply believe that undefeated teams should outrank teams with one loss. Apparently MaxPreps, a national poll, agrees. They have Mililani ranked the highest, and Kahuku next. College Polls,Professional Polls all reflect this same view. Why is my point of view any less valid…sir?

  12. ManoaRainbow October 20, 2015 3:17 pm

    Goodstory keep making your community look bad! smh!

    oh and for a second time, if it stops your whinning!

    #1 Kahuku
    #2 St. Louis

    Shhhhhh…Big People are talking. Go suck on a pacifier or something Go ahead Realisic…

  14. SportsGirl808 October 20, 2015 3:38 pm

    Funny how only the OIA teams are the ones always complaining. If you ask me…an OIA team should win EVERY sports championship due to how many OIA teams are in a State Tournament. For every one ILH, MIL and BIL team…there 3-5 OIA teams.

  15. Billy Hull October 20, 2015 3:49 pm

    Wow. Quite the interesting discussion in here. I’ll add some fun to this. Here is my ballot this week.

    1. Saint Louis; 2. Kahuku; 3. Mililani; 4. Punahou; 5. Kamehameha; 6. Waianae; 7. Farrington; 8. Kailua; 9. Kapolei; 10. Radford.

    First off, there is no way I would rank a one-loss Mililani over a one-loss Saint Louis, regardless if I think a healthy Trojans team could beat the Crusaders. I know both teams have one loss and Mililani”s came out of state, but I saw Saint Louis absolutely crush a Liberty High team that a week later rolled up 70-plus on the Trojans. I know there’s travel involved but that doesn’t make up for the huge difference in performance when you compare the two game. Saint Louis has lost one game this year, a double overtime game against Punahou. That’s as 50-50 of a game as you can have. I thought Saint Louis was the better team overall on the field but it came down to too many self-inflicted mistakes.

    It’s kind of like evaluating Michigan in college football. Most people dropped them in their college football rankings because they “lost” to Michigan State, but in reality, Michigan played the better game, looked like the better team, and lost on a flukey play. Should that one fluke play at the end decide that Michigan State is a better team? I don’t necessarily think so.

    Kahuku has rolled everyone they played and that Kapolei score was impressive. I know they’ve won titles before being one-dimensional on offense but when I envision the Red Raiders playing the Crusaders, I can’t see them COMPLETELY shutting down Tua and Co. They will slow them down, no doubt, but that offense is still going to have to come up with 20 points against Saint Louis to win that game in my opinion.

    I feel OK putting a one-loss Saint Louis team whose only loss was a 50-50 double overtime loss to the previous No. 1 team in Punahou over an undefeated Kahuku team because the Crusaders came back and beat Punahou convincingly and their schedule is so much tougher. Now, if Saint Louis comes out of the ILH but then waits and we see Kahuku run through these next two OIA games, then things could definitely change. But that’s how I see it for now.

    Now enjoy ripping me to shreds Kahuku fans! Just remember to keep it all in fun on here. We really don’t want to have to start deleting posts and not allow people to share their opinions on here because we can’t keep it civil.

    Aloha!

  16. ManoaRainbow October 20, 2015 3:54 pm

    Goodstory the only one that going cry and whine about your post Billy!

    Everyone else in here is civil and respectful.

    At this point in the season it doesnt matter what the rankings are. All the top teams are stil playing and the better teams will make it to the finals. The best team will be left standing. Until then all the whinning is annoying.

  17. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 3:59 pm

    @Manoa. Oh No!! My community looks bad because of lil ‘ol me!!

    Yeah…right.

    If my community looks bad to you it’s because you haven’t bothered to remove da beam from your eye. Nice try Mr “I’m so much better den you cuz I take the self-defined high road.” Puhleaz. There is no such thing as true altruism (Google it…I know you will) today so you’re getting some type of self-satisfaction from jumping in on this thread…JUST LIKE THE REST OF US.

    i.e. You’re no different/better. So don’t act like it.

  18. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 4:20 pm

    @Realistic Even with our minuscule (Google it) resources Kahuku won the state We The People competition (Google that too) earlier this year and was one of only 56 teams to compete in the national competition in Washington DC.

    When I was in school we had a Top 10 nationally ranked band that beat ALL the Hawaii bands EVERY YEAR (including Kam, Mililani, Moanalua, etc). No other Hawaii band has even come CLOSE to matching that standard before or since.

    All without the millions that Kam, Punahou, etc have access to. We do the best we can with the crappy budget and facilities we have…and we still manage to excel and beat out most public AND private schools. Good thing for the rest of the state that our RLS (Rate Limiting Step – Google that too) of being one of the fiscally POOREST schools in the NATION has a debilitating effect on our attempts to succeed. Imagine if we had the same resources as Punahou??? Yeah…we’d be sweeping everything.

    Just go give thanks that the DOE seems hellbent on upgrading every other schools facilities except ours. That helps level the playing field…if only just a little.

    Now go… No… Just go. Hahahahaaaaaa!!

  19. Lee Boy October 20, 2015 4:24 pm

    @ Billy Hull- Finally a fan with common sense in this forum. Outstanding post braddah, there are only two Kahuku fans that can’t keep thing civil and everyone knos who they are. Good Story, 88 and GoBigRed. The rest of the Kahuku fans are good folks, but like in every community there is always some bad apples. BTW GoBigRed loves the ILH

  20. 88 October 20, 2015 4:38 pm

    That’s 3 you idiot. Learn to count before you come talk with the adults.

  21. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 4:38 pm

  23. Lee Boy October 20, 2015 4:44 pm

    Hahaha GoBigRed and Good Story is the same dude. I appreciate you calling me an Idiot though

  24. Good Story October 20, 2015 4:56 pm

    @Lee Boy
    You are too predictable.

    @Billy Hull
    Thank you for making my point. You’ve painted the picture that you are involved with the polling process, Your seemingly one sided reprimand has at least given us a peek at your bias, as made evident by Lee Boys reaction. At least that is my perception ..and I’m sure you know better than most that Perception is Reality.

  25. hi808 October 20, 2015 5:38 pm

    Khon2 blitz got Kahuku at #1. See what having a Kahuku alum on the inside does!

  26. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 5:53 pm

    Just to clarify. I’m on da mainland. I believe I have told you this before Lee Boy. All dat pakalolo and alcohol has killed your brain cells.

    Don’t care if you think Good Story and I are the same. Our different IP addresses prove otherwise.

    Keep smoking what you smoking. It’s serving you well. Not.

  32. Pukateet October 20, 2015 7:17 pm

    @manoa don’t you think it as childish to think that comments from 2 or 3 people on this board can make an ENTIRE community look bad?

  33. Football Fan 68 October 20, 2015 9:36 pm

    The SBAC scores came out today and Kahuku is nowhere to be found.

  34. Good Story October 20, 2015 9:39 pm

    @Football Fan 68
    Can you provide a list of those that were? Or did you just single out Kahuku to come and talk smack?

  35. 88 October 20, 2015 9:54 pm

    He can’t so I will say what he doesn’t have the balls to say yet try’s to elude too. Kahuku places sports before education. So other than Congressman, Sheriff of the State of Hawaii, State senator, business owner, pro athlete, D1 college coach, State Judge, etc…. They will never amount to anything in life.

  36. Lee Boy October 20, 2015 10:20 pm

    @88- Smh brah you have some serious anger issues. Why are you so mad all the time, life is short.

  37. 008 October 21, 2015 1:35 am

    I’m a OG Red Raider and yes Kahuku Fans not all but alot of them has turned into cry babies. WTH! They probably never played ball before or if they did they must’ve been scrubs. The only rankings that matters is at the end of the season. I tell you it’s this generation of being political correct! All cry babies and yes I am an OG RRFL from back in the day,former all world there so enough crying already it’s getting sickening. Just support our boys and staff because me and the other OGS are ALL IN! RRFL you FUAMS!

  38. Homegrown October 21, 2015 6:36 am

    @billy hull mahalo for chiming in. Appreciate the insight. Question: what if Punahou barely wins, and Kahuku and Mililani both win convincingly? Does Punahou leapfrog them back into 1st place? What have you noticed on St.Louis’ defense that makes you believe Kahuku would have a hard time scoring 20?

    Anyway like someone posted earlier, we’re getting ahead of ourselves, and should show some respect to da Govs who always play Kahuku tough. Barring some crazy case of fumble-itis and penalty fest meltdown, Kahuku’s offense will continue to bulldoze its way past the remaining teams ranked ahead of them.

    -TylerO

  39. Realistic October 21, 2015 7:15 am

    @ Good Story, regardless of who is #1, I cannot see how the poll is biased when the OIA is represented by so many more teams than the ILH. If anything, the poll is biased towards the OIA, and I am an OIA guy. Let’s just be objective here.

    St. Louis beat a Punahou team that lost 1 game (vs. Mililani in the championships last year) in the past two years. Mililani when healthy can make a strong argument for being #1, but they do not have their quarterback. As for Kahuku, once they beat Mililani (if they get that far) can then make a case to be #1. Now if they beat Mililani without their injured QB, then that is a different story.

    I am still more concerned with the scores I saw yesterday for Kahuku High School and Intermediate than a High School Football Poll. Can we start a new string about academics please? That should be the real story, how education out there is failing the kids.

    As for national rankings, Max Preps are not more accurate than local voters. I would be very surprised if any of the people (or computers) have even seen a Hawaii High School game this year.

  40. Realistic October 21, 2015 7:17 am

    @homegrown I think beating a really good team by 1 is way more impressive than beating a decent team by 40. Just my opinion. But I do think that being below the state level for proficiency in both math and reading is really bad.

  41. Realistic October 21, 2015 7:24 am

    @GoBigRed, every school has a small amount of really smart kids. Winning a competition when you can take your top few kids is great for those kids, but what about the remaining 95+%? Look at the numbers that were just released yesterday to the public for the 2015 SBAC for both the Kahuku High School & Intermediate School. The low scores are alarming, troubling, and honestly sad for the kids.

    Do you care to defend why the scores as so low?

    As for the We the People competition, you do know that not all the school enter that? That is the same as Kahuku entering a football tourney with Damien, Waialua, St. Francis, & Kalani. Also the contest promotes Civic Competence & Responsibility. While important, you notice that the DOE, Private Schools, Colleges, use little or none of this on their Standardized Test.

    I would be more impressed if you brought up a mathematics, reading, or writing competition that they won where they competition was from Punahou, Iolani, or Singaporean Students.

    Please try again maam.

  42. Homegrown October 21, 2015 8:43 am

    @Realistic Lmk where I can view these SBAC results. Mahalo! Although I’m skeptical that you’re genuinely concerned for the kids, I’m interested to see how Kahuku in particular stacks up with the rest of the Public schools statewide. I’m leaning more towards you chiming in here to take a subtle jab at Kahuku’s focus on success on the field contributing to failure in the classroom. Which I don’t think is necessarily true. Could their scores be better on these standardized test? Absolutely. Along 99% of the public schools in the state.

  43. Realistic October 21, 2015 9:07 am

    http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/Pages/Home.aspx

    I am offended that you question my concern for children. But I understand why you have a pessimistic view on life. It’s too bad for the kids out there. And there are many Hawaii High Schools that have performed much better, Kalani, Moanalua, McKinley to name a few.

    And I am not taking a subtle jab. I am saying it pretty clear and direct.

  44. Realistic October 21, 2015 9:16 am

    http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/ParentsAndStudents/EnrollingInSchool/SchoolFinder/Pages/Kahuku-High–Intermediate.aspx

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/newspremium/20151021_isle_schools_still_struggle.html?id=334964011

    Math Meeting Standard = 28% (Statewide Average = 41%)
    ELA/Literacy Meeting Standard = 20% (Statewide Average = 48%)
    Science Proficiency = 26% (Statewide Average = 41%)

    @Homegrown, these are very bad scores. I feel for the kids. Maybe if they attacked the books with the same passion like the gridiron, the scores would be better and these children would be more positioned to go to college and get a good job in life.

    Only 51% of kids who graduate (89% graduate) go to college.

    Well homegrown this is how they stack up and in my opinion it doesn’t look too good. But then again everyone has different opinions of what is bad.

  45. 88 October 21, 2015 10:08 am

    There are about 65 kids on the varsity football team. There are almost 2000 kids total who attend Kahuku High and Intermediate. Are you saying that these 65 kids are the cause for the low test scores? Are you saying that some how our football coaches/players and players parents are able to influence the other 1935 kids who do not play football to not study? Or does every teacher and Admin at Kahuku only care about those 65 football players and dedicate everything towards them and only them? You dont have a genuine concern for the kids so stop pretending like you do. This is just a sad attempt by you to put down kids that play football for Kahuku.

  46. Good Story October 21, 2015 10:27 am

    @Realistic
    It’s more about where you are choosing to bring his up that reveals your true intentions. Did you also chime in on articles about Mililani, Waianae, or other forums? Or is this an attempt only to make us look bad? I am happy to engage you regarding failed educational policies, I just doubt your true intentions here.

    BTW…no wonder it took you a whole day to respond.

  47. Realistic October 21, 2015 10:53 am

    @ Good Story, I took a whole day to reply since the servers were being hogged by your jibberish.

    Here is Mililani:
    Math Meeting Standard = 56% (Kahuku is 28%) – Doubled Kahuku’s Score
    ELA/Literacy Meeting Standard = 20% (Kahuku is 67%) – More than tripled Kahuku’s Score
    Science Proficiency = 51% (Statewide Average = 26%) – Almost doubled Kahuku’s Score

    So it’s not even close. Remember when you rebutt these scientific numbers please cite your sources since we all know you are not able to come up with critical or scholarly thought on your own.

    And I am not trying to make you look bad, the numbers do that without my help. Maybe instead of wasting your time on a blog, go down to the school and tutor a kid. But then again based on your academic prowess, that wouldn’t really help the kid and the scores would go down. We have two days of posts to show the world your ignorance and lack of high level thinking. Keep trying. You do get an A for effort. But a F for intelligence. Keep deflecting and making excuses.

  48. Realistic October 21, 2015 10:57 am

    @ 88 I am saying that the academics is poor there. I am also saying if the community backed academics like they did football I strongly believe the academics would improve greatly.

    Case in point. I recall when Coach Reggie Torres as first hired. Parents were not happy and many parents showed up to practice to voice their displeasure. Do those same parents/families show up when a kid does badly on a test? And I am talking about a large group or adults, not one or two.

  49. Realistic October 21, 2015 10:59 am

    @BadStory, you really want to compare your academics to Waianae? Way to set that bar high maam!

  50. Good Story October 21, 2015 11:16 am

    @Realistic
    I will overlook the name calling and applaud your research…your passion is to be commended.
