A big weekend for both Saint Louis and Kahuku paved the way for the Crusaders and Red Raiders to take over the top two spots in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 released Monday.

The Crusaders went from having their season possibly end on Saturday night to pulling in the No. 1 ranking for the first time in four weeks following a 30-14 victory over Punahou, which saw its three-week reign at the top come to an end.

Saint Louis trailed 14-0 and was on the verge of falling behind further when Buffanblu RB Wayne Taulapapa fumbled near the goal line. The Crusaders went on to hit a 97-yard touchdown pass from QB Tua Tagovailoa to Drew Kobayashi and it was all Saint Louis from then on as the Crusaders scored the final 30 points to win comfortably.

Saint Louis received nine of the 14 first-place votes to stay in front of Kahuku, which throttled Kapolei 56-10 in the OIA quarterfinals. The Red Raiders earned the other five first-place votes to jump to its highest spot in the rankings all season at No. 2. Kahuku was listed either first and second on all but one ballot, which had the Red Raiders third.

Punahou dropped to No. 3 but remained ahead of defending state champion Mililani, which was fourth for the third straight week. Mililani beat Moanalua 48-13 in the OIA quarterfinals with freshman Dillon Gabriel getting the majority of the work at quarterback. Trojans RB Vavae Malepeai went over 200 yards for the second straight game and is officially on record watch toward becoming the all-time leading rusher in Hawaii high school history.

Malepeai passed Damien’s Kama Bailey for fourth on the all-time list and is 63 yards away from reaching 4,000 in his career. He currently trails the record holder, ‘Iolani’s Joe Igber, by 491 yards.

Kamehameha, which beat ‘Iolani 39-24 despite giving up an ILH Division I record 485 yards passing to Raiders QB Tai-John Mizutani, held on to the fifth spot ahead of Waianae, which is sixth.

Farrington jumped to No. 7 followed by a first this season. Two Division II teams are ranked for the first time as Kapaa moved up to No. 8 and Radford debuted in the top 10 at No. 9. The Rams are 10-0 this season and are giving up an average of only 4.6 points per game after locking up a Division II state tournament berth with a 23-6 win over Waialua. Radford will get Kaimuki in the OIA D-II title game in two weeks.

Kailua edged Kapolei for the No. 10 spot.

Wow…gotta love that ILH bias. I would’ve been happy even if Mililani was #1. Interesting…

  2. Choice is mines not yours October 19, 2015 2:56 pm

Guess if Punahou wins this week they’ll be number 1 again? National rankings don’t factor in?

  3. KonaWarrior October 19, 2015 3:07 pm

As much I like seeing the Crusaders at the top spot, I believe Kahuku deserves to be #1. They are not only undefeated, but have won convincingly over some very good teams. My vote would look like this: 1)Kahuku 2)St. Louis 3)Punahou 4)Mililani (would be 3 if McKenzie Milton was healthy).

  4. GoBigRed October 19, 2015 3:39 pm

Das okay. Unfortunately for the other teams all these rankings mean diddly on the field…where Kahuku is the clear #1. St Louis was lucky talaupapa fumbled 3 times. They should’ve been down 21-0 at halftime and if that had happened I’m pretty sure Punahou would have a bye this week.

How does a team go undefeated, allowing only 32 points all year, dominating teams that have dominated other teams (Waianae and Kapolei (twice))… And still not #1??? All da Cal Lee bandwagon voters going be crying by da end of this season… Maybe even as soon as this weekend. Terrible. And ignorant.

  5. Homegrown October 19, 2015 4:24 pm

Pay no mind to these rankings Red Raider fans. Let the boys settle it one the field, one dominating game after the other. Should StL come out of the ILH, Mililani will take care of them in the state semi-finals

  6. BleedRed October 19, 2015 5:17 pm

How are the teams going to be seeded in the state championship, does the ILH get the number 1 seed or does it go to the OIA,and which seed does the OIA runner up get?Just curious!

  7. Insideoutsidein October 19, 2015 6:38 pm

Again, how the hell is Kapaa ranked among the D1 when they only play 2 unranked D2 teams. Please explain…

  8. MadMax October 19, 2015 6:47 pm

Why is Stl #1? Beat Samoa #1, Nevada #2, Hawaii #5 twice, and hawaii #1. Hmmmmmmmm!

  9. Maroon October 19, 2015 7:02 pm

So Kahuku deserves #1 when they literally challenged nobodies in the league?

  10. GoBigRed October 19, 2015 7:34 pm

Everybody always talks about the current team to play Kahuku…right up until kickoff.

Waianae was supposed to stop da run and run good against us. What happened? In fact, their avg points is crazy….except vs Big Red. ZERO points and BARELY had positive yards for da whole game! And couldn’t stop our run with ELEVEN IN DA BOX.

Den it was Kapoleis turn and EVERYBODY talking about their great offense and freshman QB phenom. Not to mention their ‘stout’ defense. And 4 picks and 430+ rushing yards later we had another debilitating outright brutal domination of a supposed ‘great’ matchup. And had TEN TO ELEVEN IN DA BOX ALL NIGHT.

Yeah…keep talking every week cuz our boys keep BULLDOZING over da next great matchup. SORRYBOUTIT GOVS. YOU NEXT!!!

As for St Louis, you still gotta beat Punahou again. Which I seriously doubt is gonna happen. You ain’t getting six turnovers again so just think of this past weekend as your Christmas, birfday, whatever. After you lose I no like hear complaints. Just sit on da couch and watch Kahuku with the rest of us.

    GO BIG RED!!

  11. Hauula93 October 19, 2015 8:42 pm

All I gotta to say is its not about who is rank number 1 in the state, it’s about who’s the better team that night.. Let’s just humble ourselves and watch how each week plays out.. Good luck to all the playoff teams and GO BIG RED…OK BYE…

  12. 808polytics October 19, 2015 8:45 pm

kahuku deserves 1 ranking..at worst 2!! ILH BIAS IS RIDDIKS!!….and wth is kapaa and radford doing in this top ten?? they play d2 schedule! auwe!

  13. Jay Gatoloai October 19, 2015 9:13 pm

Lol.. Big Red, se ioe!!! Just worry about the Govs!! If you was a true fan of the sport then you’d knw that you take 1 game at a time and you NEVER over look an appointment.. don’t worry about dem Crusaders, they’ll be coached up and ready to go. Sounds like you got something againt St.Louis tho?? Its all good tho my man!! Glad to see a Former Crusader turn things around for the program.. 14. Good Story October 19, 2015 9:18 pm

    @ Maroon
So name your “some bodies”…judging by your name, is it Farrington? Throw some specifics so that I can call you out each and everytime.

  15. Good Story October 19, 2015 9:23 pm

    @Jay
You and a lot of people confuse these forums with the actual games. The coaches and the boys will take care of business. We just here to rebuke all the trash talking…You don’t worry about the Red Raiders-we’ll be just fine as well.

  16. Good Story October 19, 2015 9:33 pm

    @Jay
BTW…it’s about time you guys gave back something for all the great athletes we gave you, that you presently have, and that you will continue to try and steal from us.

  17. Jay Gatoloai October 19, 2015 10:09 pm

Rebuke the trash talking by trash talking about another school who just like Kahuku, has kids putting in work day in and day out?? Your name fits you well “GOOD STORY” lol as for stealing? Stop it bruh!!! Didn’t knw kids could make the choice of going to a school without parent consent.. go speak to them about that!!lol

  18. MadMax October 19, 2015 10:16 pm

Kahuku undefeated record came against teams with a record of 26-46. Stl record played teams with combined record of 23-13. But only people with an understanding of how polls work understands why Stl is the deserving #1.

  19. ilh October 19, 2015 10:18 pm

KAHUKU FANS, DON’T GET TO EXCITED YET, THE TEAMS YOU PLAYED SO FAR ARE WEAK TEAMS, YOU WILL BE TESTED IN THE WEEKS AHEAD, AS WE GET TO THE WAY BETTER TEAMS, AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT NOT BEING SELECTED AS # 1 JUST YET, IT DOESN’T MEAN YOU ARE UNDEFEATED YOU DESERVE TO BE #1, YOUR SCHEDULE EVERY YEAR IS WEAK. YOU NEED TO START PLAYING TEAMS LIKE, ST. LOUIS, PUNAHOU, KAMEHAMEHA WEEK AFTER WEEK AND SEE HOW FAR YOU WILL GO.

  20. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:18 pm

    @Jay
Just applying your same logic. Last time I checked Coach Tata, sought out the coaching job here in Kahuku-but we supposed to thank you? Cannot have it both ways braddah.

  21. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:23 pm

    @ILH
Same boring, arguments..we are ILH, we are better than you, blah blah blah. Get over yourself. Funny how the OIA still has more championships.

  22. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:43 pm

    @MadMax
Record of Kahuku at the State Championship 7-2
    Record of St. Louis 3-5

I’m not even counting the year with the *. So please forgive us if we’re a little skeptical of the polls, cause more often than not we’ve proven it wrong.

  23. Jay Gatoloai October 19, 2015 10:44 pm

    If you only knew bruh!!!lol

  24. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:50 pm

    Right back at you…

  25. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:51 pm

    Lol

  26. Jay Gatoloai October 19, 2015 10:53 pm

Cdfu at “sought out the coaching job”… “GOOD STORY”

  27. Good Story October 19, 2015 10:55 pm

    Typical…no facts.

  28. Jay Gatoloai October 19, 2015 11:05 pm

Like I said, if you only knew!! Good luck to the red raiders tho!!! Keep up the good work OG Tata and to the rest of the coaching staff aswell!!!

  29. Paper Crane October 19, 2015 11:47 pm

Recruiting days are coming to a U-turn compromise like hijacking and confiscating athletes from Red Raiders Country will be more then the parents consent whereas for their dream athlete to play in private schools; like our athletes today are smarter then what most parents dream thinking is all about;..so them athletes and their dream choices requires only their consent whereas to stay put at Red Raider Public and so this here is really what a dream athlete final consent is all about like it promotes for more positive motivation and it brings on the fullest of satisfaction;..if you ever accomplished anything that took place by negative motivation well you’ll find that negative motivation doesn’t give the individual full satisfaction upon any achievement whereas that satisfaction points only at those who choose to consent for the individual or the group;..bottomline is the desire to achieve is not 100%;…so heads up parents your personal (what you yourself wanted to be) choice may not be better then the best choice for your dream athlete;…this is very obvious in any high impact team sports like not everyone is good and not everyone will play so them not playing atletes parents are not fully satisfied yet still their dream athlete is part of the team whereas he could have been in public school of his choice like doing and achieving with the fullest of satisfaction;…mahalo and like god bless you and yours.

  30. Northshore October 20, 2015 2:40 am

IRT: Insideoutsidein: You’re right about the rankings, it’s all bogus when they have division II teams ranked with division I teams. So really, who cares about the rankings, let the teams play and whoever ends up as being the state champion is number 1 and the rest of the teams ranked accordingly. Right now, it doesn’t matter where Kahuku is ranked, whether it be 2nd or 5th or whatever, because the rankings will be established on the playing field, no by voters who are bias.

  31. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 6:13 am

@Jay: CDFU at your cdfu… not good story… true story. Hello? All coaches had to apply. And don’t get me wrong… he’s a VAST IMPROVEMENT over last year’s mistake of a HC. But some of the other finalists that were RR4L would’ve accomplished the same thing…because of the TALENT alone (even minus da talent that ILH teams – all of them – recruit).

Also, Santa only comes ONCE A YEAR! HAHAHAHAAAAAA! DOH!

Stop talking bubbles bout stuff u don’t know… Who had #1 Defense LAST YEAR before Tata came along??? With same players…? Who basically shut down Trojans and Punahou’s ‘great’ offenses last year in playoffs last year? With a RR4L as da DC??? AND (if given da opportunity) WILL DO IT AGAIN THIS YEAR! As far as defense at Kahuku goes…it ain’t about da coaches…it’s about da TALENT and DETERMINATION of da boys. Riddle me dat babogum…

*IF* St Louis makes it to states, I’m wondering how da heck dey gonna handle our dominant O line when dey can BARELY manage a Punahou O line that starts THREE SOPHOMORES…??? Just go pray for a miracle this weekend…cuz das what it’s gonna take to beat Punahou 2 times in a row… you know some kind of miracle like SIX TURNOVERS (not gonna happen)… go sit on da couch and cry.

  32. Good Story October 20, 2015 7:21 am

I mean…did we force him to take the job!? Did “OG Tata” not have a choice? Still not sure what that fwam was trying to say.

  33. Jay Gatoloai October 20, 2015 8:31 am

    Love the double team folks!!!lol

Big Red.. issue with your post is how you feel like everyone is against the Red raiders when you look like a fool putting down Other high school programs too.. I never mentioned anything about kahukuz program so b4 you get all crazy and talk heavy on here, read my post again buddy.. and nevermind bring up the past, it’s playoffs!!!new season!!! All that “did you see what we did last year” don’t mean nothing ryt now!!! Kahukuz always had talent but you tryna make it seem like a coach isnt needed.. So tell me, was Coach Livai a good coach or a waste of time since Kahuku already had talent talent on the field??

  34. Rok888 October 20, 2015 8:57 am

Kahuku doesn’t deserve to be #1. They haven’t beaten anybody in the top 5. Their schedule is so weak. Punahou and St. Louis play a top 5 team almost every week.

  35. Rok888 October 20, 2015 9:03 am

27 Punahou players are from the town area. I don’t hear McKinley complaining. Punahou has a couple of Laie kids on the team and all of Kahuku is crying. They should be happy that these kids have an opportunity for some good education.

  36. 88 October 20, 2015 9:39 am

So if Kahuku and Mililani play each other twice every year and are ranked 1 and 2 in the state they should just switch ranking depending on the outcome of their games against each other? Thats dumbest thing i ever heard. You talk about the ILH being dominant but lets pull up the records. Does the ILH have a losing record when it comes to State Title games? YES. Does the OIA have more State Football Titles than the ILH? YES. Does a OIA school have more State Football Titles than ALL the ILH schools put together? YES.

  37. 88 October 20, 2015 9:41 am

And out of those 27 town kids how many are impact players on the team?

  38. Rok888 October 20, 2015 9:48 am

18 of the 27 kids from the town area play a major role on the team…nobody is complaining…Kaimuki, McKinnely are happy for their kids. only people from Laie who cant see the value of a good education and opportunity complain about Punahou “stealing” their kids….

  39. Insideoutsidein October 20, 2015 11:08 am

@rok888 yes others don’t complain..because they also have the opportunity to be at a school that are being recognized as an academics opportunity. Give the Kahuku fans credit who wish their boys could stay home. Does the ilh offer Kahuku kids on academics only? I don’t think so…or Maybe they do but not as much as they do with athletic players. Think about it… If they were to say home…..without being cynical.

  40. Good Story October 20, 2015 11:21 am

    @Jay
I think you are getting confused. We always give credit to the kids and parents. No matter if it’s Semones, Livai, Torres, Leslie, or Tata. You the only one trying to give credit to the coaches cause they from St. Louis
Nevah mind the double team..again typical. Whining once you start losing. Not our fault everyone sees you for what you are…a fraud. But go ahead and recruit…you guys are good at that.

  41. Insideoutsidein October 20, 2015 11:23 am

@rok888 another note. Kahuku high school gpa has increased which means academics is serious there. Also, after a few years at an ilh school, it will be financially tough to afford paying the balance of a partial scholarship when jobs on the north shore are hard to come by and fuel prices to and from work if they work in town. That’s why some of these kids are going back home.

  42. GoBigRed October 20, 2015 11:28 am

@Rok define “major role”. U mean like starting QB maybe? Punters don’t count. Go ask Michigan.

@Jay io cry fo da baby. I LOVED double teams = doing my job. Duh.

@whocaresanyway?? Can’t wait for this weekend!

  43. Northshore October 20, 2015 11:32 am

IRT: Rok88: There’s is a difference between stealing exceptional athletes from any high school or trying to stack a team with exceptional athletes by providing “financial aid.” What parent with not enough income and not able to afford a private school would want the best for their son or daughter? If all private schools were to field a team with players that are able to pay their tuition by their parents, their sports program wouldn’t be winning as many state championships or would be doing well in sports. It doesn’t matter whether these athletes are being “recruited” from Mckinley, Waianae, Kailua, Pearl City or Kahuku, if these athletes remained in their respective communities, they would probably have a better and a stronger sports program. No, we’re not crying in Kahuku because the talent of athletes will just reload when one decides to attend a private school for prestige and a better education. It’s just a matter of experiencing many sacrifices by both parents and athlete and kahuku will overcome, reload because the talent will be here for the next 20 years.

  44. Northshore October 20, 2015 11:49 am

IRTRok888: First let me tell you, who cares about the high school football rankings in Hawaii. It’s bogus because Division II schools are amongst the rankings with Division I schools. Could careless if kahuku was ranked 10th because it only counts when you prove yourself to be number 1 at the end of the season. Those involved with the rankings are bias anyway, and it’s just a matter of their opinion, so it only counts at the end of the season, whoever will be the state champion. Don’t worry about the small stuff because we have no control of this bogus football ranking…if only the SA Sports Section would take the time and do it right…Division I ranking and Division II ranking.

  45. Jay Gatoloai October 20, 2015 11:50 am

Good Story.. try reading your butt buddy’s post then you’ll see why I said what I said.. you’re the one confused!! the only reason why I brought up that Tata was from saint louis was because it sounded like your boi GoBigRed had something against St.Louis with his 2nd post.. you coming from left field with all your comments bruh!! No whining coming from here big dog!!

  46. hwnstyll October 20, 2015 11:54 am

Overcome? Overcome? I see it has a blessing to have so many kids with talents in one neighborhood that they all can play on different teams instead of how it was before with parents complaining about playing time and getting Kahuku coaches fired.
Yes be proud of all your Sons of the north shore and not just the Kahuku ones.
How great it must be to always have north shore boys in every state championship regardless which team is playing.
Coach Leslie was a divider and we are glad he is gone, Tata never speaks of any players but his own, because that is all that matters. Boys go to other schools good for them, boys stay home good for them too, the main thing is they all get to play.

  47. Good Story October 20, 2015 12:16 pm

    @Jay
    Signs of losing a discussion:
    1. Pretending to know something that no one else does
    2. Whining about being ganged up on
    3. Name calling
    4.
    Keep going “bruh”. Again..typical.

  48. Good Story October 20, 2015 12:22 pm

BTW…denial usually comes next. Wanted to give you a chance before you type something like “I’m not losing this discussion “

  49. ManoaRainbow October 20, 2015 12:45 pm

Beware bretheren of these Kahuku fans, its proven before on previous blogs that they post under multiple names and argue with them self to make it look like haters exist. In the Kapolei post it was one Kahuku fan talking trash about Kahuku and Kapolei under 4 different screen names. lol!

No body other then Kahuku cares about High school football enough to start drama over a silly ranking system! All the other schools are too busy preparing for their next game and with all due respect to the Kahuku players and coaches they are preparing too, but its the fans like Goodstory/Gobigred with no respect for other schools and got to come and wine online about it.

I have several friends and co-workers with kids that are playing football for Mililani, Kapolei, Campbell, St. Louis and Kam and they have all told me that they have seen all the childish hateful posts that Kahuku fans are posting on this website.

Goodstory/Gobigred keep making your entire community look bad!

Will my poll make you feel better and stop your whinning?!!

    #1 – Kahuku
    #2 – St. Louis

  50. Manly October 20, 2015 12:48 pm

No way that Kapaa should be ranked above Kapolei or Kailua. A D2 team? That means at least 18 D1 teams are ranked lower. So do they go up next year? Or do they go the “Iolani” route?
