Mililani, Kahuku tied in Star-Advertiser Top 10

Two-time defending OIA champion Kahuku had arguably its best outing of the season on Friday when it dismantled Campbell, 45-6, to clinch the OIA Blue Division title.

Yet, there’s a growing swell among voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 that the Red Raiders might not be the favorite in the OIA playoffs.

Mililani, which blanked Kailua 52-0 to end the regular season on Saturday, moved into a tie for second with Kahuku in the latest state rankings released today.

An even number of voters (five) had Mililani picked second and Kahuku picked second behind unanimous No. 1 Saint Louis, which fell to No. 25 in the country in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 this week.

As division champions, Mililani and Kahuku earned the top seeds in the OIA playoffs and would not meet until the final.

The Trojans hold the longest winning streak in the state among Division I teams at 12. Mililani hasn’t lost since a 38-33 game against Waianae in the OIA quarterfinals last season.

Voters were also impressed by Kamehameha’s showing against Saint Louis with a healthy Thomas Yam at quarterback in a 23-12 loss.

Tied with Waianae in last week’s rankings, the Warriors surged ahead in the No. 5 spot, nine votes ahead of the Seariders, who didn’t play because of a Kaiser forfeit.

No. 6 Waianae finished just two votes ahead of the surging Leilehua Mules, who at No. 7, earned their highest ranking in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 since Week 10 in 2014.

The Mules flattened Farrington, 33-6, for their fifth straight victory.

Campbell fell one spot to No. 8, followed by Lahainaluna and Damien.

Other teams receiving votes were Kapolei (six), Farrington (three), Waipahu (two), Kapaa (one) and Konawaena (one).

Am I reading that correctly, Kapaa received one vote along with Konawaena? Is this a joke?

  2. TooMeke October 2, 2017 1:42 pm

This poll has a history of being biased against Big Red. And they are repeatedly proved wrong.

That fact that Kapaa and Konawaena received votes…and Lahainaluna and Damien are ranked above Kapolei and Farrington speaks volumes about the lack of football knowledge these voters have.

    It’s good for entertainment value…and that’s it.

I’m just glad it’s playoff time so people can watch as we roll over teams…again.

    RRFL.

  3. FightingHawynOfNotreDame October 2, 2017 1:56 pm

Did this guy just say that the poll of a twitter page that has Kahuku fans as it banner is biased against Kahuku? Serioulsy?!? Thanks for the laugh!

  4. Awrite!! October 2, 2017 2:14 pm

Toomeke is kind of an idiot but he has a point in that the state and media get all excited about any offense that can throw the rock and blow out teams. They dont tilt a hair to credit defense which is usually the factor when Kahuku beats these so called high-flying offenses.

  5. Kick Rocks October 2, 2017 3:10 pm

Kahuku gonna roll ah? Can’t wait

  6. MillCampBoyz October 2, 2017 4:37 pm

I just wish Farrington or Kapolei would play Lahainaluna or Konawaena or Damien and after they lose I can laugh my butt off at you guys! You guys would have hard time against them! Believe me!! I know! I dunno if you guys know, but..WHO did you guys (Farrington or Kapolei) win against?..REALLY?!?!..you guys should drop to D2! You guys wasting our time in D1! Let Waipahu, Damien and especially Lahainaluna come D1, I like play them! They not ranked 9 for nuttin!! If you guys not top10, SHADDUPP HATERS LOL!!

“two-time defending OIA champion Kahuku had arguably its best outing of the season on Friday when it dismantled Campbell, 45-6, to clinch the OIA Blue Division title.”

Seriously? It’s because there’s no good teams in the state besides St. Louis, Mililani, Kahuku, Kamehameha, and Punahou. Other than those teams I just mentioned, everyone’s pretty much playing crappy football. Nobody else can compete with these teams. Other than that All of the teams I just mentioned would blow out every other OIA team because quite frankly, the OIA is terrible besides for Kahuku and Mililani. What sucks is that the ILH has a one month bye because of the OIA playoffs and that’s way too long, but can be good for those with injuries. But to say they had the best outing, uh…obviously what do you think? Campbell is not a good team even though these guys doing the polls rank them on the top 10.

  8. Hau'ulaBoy October 2, 2017 7:14 pm

TooMeke, you got that right. Let’s roll. RR4L._.

  9. Hau'ulaBoy October 2, 2017 7:26 pm

Lunas, Konawaena and Damien would not beat Kapolei or Farrington. Too funny dis guy. Those teams couldnt even beat Waipahu. Goooood story. If those teams could hang, then the coaches and AD’s would not have opted out of the D1 (open division).

  10. 88 October 2, 2017 8:12 pm

If you think Kam and Punahou are good you need to check your head. All i know is if that same Crusader team that played Kam last week shows up, Kahuku is going to mop the floor with them.

  11. Education First October 2, 2017 9:37 pm

Can you guys ever be original? Let’s examine:

    1) Your school’s nickname “Red Raiders” comes from receiving “free” uniforms from Iolani way back when.

    2) Your tomahawk chop originates from both the Atlanta Braves and Florida State Seminoles way before Kahuku started to do it.

    3) Your RRFL tag is a weak copycat of the NWO’s (New World Order) slogan, NWO 4 Life. That shirt was sold online and their slogan was advertised all over TNT when WCW’s Monday Night Nitro was the #1 most watched cable television show. Your use of the “For Life” saying is just uncreative and lacks any originality.

Like I said, can you guys come up with anything new. If you are going to copy it, at least cite your sources.

    #RRFL (BWAHAHAH!)

  14. Recruit dis October 3, 2017 7:09 am

88- you must me smoking if you guys going mop the crusaders. If you know football when you play the same good football team twice it gets a little harder. That’s something you wouldn’t know because you don’t even play them once. Just imagine if you played mililani twice. Even this weeks game against punahou is going to be a good one so I wouldn’t expect St. Louis to beat them by the same margin.

  15. Recruit dis October 3, 2017 7:12 am

88- kam and punahou is way better then any oia teams you guys played. Just look at the rankings it doesn’t lie. That’s both rankings .

Yeah I am jealous that you have some of the most unintelligent students and athletes in Hawaii if not the entire US. I am jealous that most of your students are illiterate, cannot count, and after high school will probably not go to college. I am jealous that my future either consists of working at McDonalds or the P.C.C.

I notice that you could not prove my criticism wrong? So instead you have to misdirect.

But if you guys are happy being Al Bundy U (accomplish nothing after HS and the best thing you ever did was play HS football), that is pretty sad.

Nice goal! Instead of wanting to be doctors or lawyers, you guys can only talk about HS football. That is a joke. And with all this talk of football, based on the Star Advertiser’s report yesterday, Kahuku only has 1 graduate in the NFL.

And you want to talk about million dollars in scholarships. What have these guys done after? And what about all the kids that couldn’t meet NCAA clearinghouse regulations and end up not going to college or end up at a JC or Community College.
C’mon man, are you that dumb?

You should be thanking me. It’s people like me who pay my taxes so you and your families can live off the taxes I pay to help with your welfare.

A simple, “Thank you!” would suffice.

  18. phILHarmonic October 3, 2017 8:05 am

As shown in their victories both Lulu and RR defenses control the outcome of the game by creating turnovers, advantageous field position and injuring key players vital to the offense(QB,RB).

So I was thinking, the winner of the game will be the one with the least worse offense??

    What you think??

  19. ??? October 3, 2017 8:09 am

When is Mililani players who actually are from Mililani going to play in a game for Mililani?

For competitive reasons, I’m glad Mililani is winning. Because if they was just another average team the comments on these blogs would be another STL kahuku pep rally.

  22. hwnstyl October 3, 2017 9:45 am

No reason to bash kids on this forum. Stick to sports on a sports blog.
I have family from Kahuku high and even though they have some over zealous fans they are just as over zealous as my St Louis and Waianae family. To all teams good luck in the playoffs and the bragging rights will be decide on the field.

  23. ??? October 3, 2017 9:54 am

  25. rrforlifebaby October 3, 2017 10:06 am

Who cares about the rankings. The only one that matters is the last one. Even then, after 1 and 2, the rest doesn’t matter.

    St Louis is St Louis
Big Red looks to be coming around, still got stuff to work on. As usual, D is going to carry this team.
Trojans with the potent offense, and looks to have a better than average D.
Kapolei appears to be turning the corner on O.
Puns don’t have the right coaches in control to beat the Lee brothers.

Good luck to all the boys in the playoffs.

    RRFL!!!

  26. rrfl October 3, 2017 10:44 am

sometimes i wonder what high school football would be like if each school was limited to only kids from their district.

  27. ??? October 3, 2017 10:49 am

It would be Real Life Reality football !!

  28. Recruit dis October 3, 2017 11:17 am

Philharmonic- St. Louis offense is better then kahukus. Just look at the numbers. Defense might be equal but St. Louis offense is better. Just look at the narbonne game the offense won that one.

  29. TooMeke October 3, 2017 11:54 am

Are you referring to the Narbonne team with no defense?

Because the next week I saw St LuLu struggle to put points on the board with an average Kam defense…average…like Waiane’s, Kapolei’s, Mililani’s, Campbell’s and Punahou’s defenses are all better than Kam’s…that kinda average.

  30. Coach C October 3, 2017 11:56 am

Who would expect a team that lost multiple All State players and a coach to be in a position like Kahuku? Plus a different offensive scheme and new coaches? The DNA of Kahuku has been run for years. That and smash mouth elephant package. Other teams would falter but Kahuku adjust. That puts them in a higher position of football IQ then many teams. But yes it’s playoff time and time to put up.

  31. Recruit dis October 3, 2017 12:19 pm

Toomeke- what happen the first time St. Louis played kam and punahou they smashed them. When you play the same team again it’s not the same and if you know football you know what I mean. Teams adjust. Just like narbonne if St. Louis played them again I guarantee it wouldn’t be the same outcome. They were a really good team that had size and speed. Don’t let there record fool you because they play good teams not like yours.

  32. Recruit dis October 3, 2017 12:36 pm

toomeke that’s the same narbonne team that held Long Beach poly to 17pts and the number 3 Qb to under 300yds. I don’t know why I debating this with you because you the same guy that lost a bet with hyn because you thought punahou would beat St. Louis . Lol!

  33. Awrite!! October 3, 2017 12:49 pm

I think the superbowl should be just like the NBA, a best of 7 series because people like Recruitdis cannot accept losing a one-on-one battle.

You know how playing the same teams over and over again benefit the ILH? because when they see a weakness in their team they go out and recruit the missing pieces. OIA is one and done man-to-man, straight up-n-up. None of this second chances, oh you win this round let me see if I can win round two.

Dis not basketball or baseball or tennis, one and done! LOsers only make excuses and are poorsport to even accept 2nd place. #elitistmentality

  34. FightingHawynOfNotreDame October 3, 2017 1:00 pm

@rrforlifebaby you are the most reasonable Kahuku fan I have ever seen.
Nobody will know how good Kahuku’s defense really is until they play Mililani. Campbell is young and made a ton of mistakes. Maybe they challenge Kahuku next year, but it’s not going to be this year.
All that matters is the State Playoffs. St. Louis will get tested by Punahou. As it was said earlier by @Recruit this, things are different when you play the same team twice. Punahou will show up and give them a fight.
And @TooMeke still a clown. Kamehameha’s average defense beat Farrington pretty easily. Farrington beat Campbell and Kapolei, two of your OIA’s supposed better teams…
Keep chirping, nothing matters until the final game.

  35. Awrite!! October 3, 2017 1:07 pm

Who wants to bet we see some of these talented sophmores in the OIA end up at STL next year?

  36. Whhy October 3, 2017 1:17 pm

Just so we are clear here Punahou and Kamehameha are just OK teams. I’m sorry but simply losing to a good/great St. Louis team doesn’t necessarily mean your “good”. Your not good by association. I’m sorry for you to brag about being good you gotta beat St. Louis. For the OIA story is simliar, you got to beat Kahuku/Mililani if you want to be part of the discussion. But we should put some into the discussion of good unless they can topple the big dog in their lane.

Here is a sad story from back in the day. I am eating dinner last night with a buddy who is a pretty big booster at U of O. He is telling me this story, and when it comes to Oregon, he is always spot on.
Former Oregon Duck QB Jeremiah Masoli used to live in San Fran. Due to some irresponsible choices and “allegations” of mugging old ladies, he was expelled from his current school. It was so bad, that the entire public school system of S.F. wouldn’t take him. That is how he got to STL. Regardless of the baggage he had and the really bad choices he was making, STL took him with open arms.

I am all for second chances, but harming old grandmas?

  41. Awrite!! October 3, 2017 2:09 pm

When your OIA team is not Kahuku or Mililani you gotta go join the bandwagon at STL in order to get exposure in the post season, two of those soph studs at Campbell is being underserved by playing there and losing, not that the program is bad or the coaching is bad but they dont have enough studs at all positions to hold their own agianst the big dogs. They will either transfer to Kapolei or ILH. transfer to the ILH and sit JR year but play SR year is still worth it for the exposure, thats what slade and iosefa did.

Kahuku has a few soph studs but they not going anywhere because they know they are surrounded with other studs that will carry them to the OIA and or State title games.

I am not jealous since I got someone’s worn things. I am not jealous that you get things donated to you that is worn from the Goodwill. I get it. You and your kids didn’t take school seriously, so you must resort to this. For for a specific population it is fine. Personally, while it is great to give, I wouldn’t want to wear someone else’s old clothes. I think it is nasty and unsanitary.

I am just saying you lack creativity. And that is fine. As for the Haka, I will give you props. You should actually get a reward for the “first time coming up with an original idea award.”

What is sad is that you guys can only hitch yourselves to sports, most noticeably football. But after the age of 18 (assuming your birth certificates are correct), there isn’t much after.

Higher Education? BYU-Hawaii’s academics is so low, that the other year US News (the most credible source for university rankings) didn’t even rank you. I bet if I checked now, it still would not be ranked. It is even lower than the community colleges around Hawaii. That is how bad it is. It is clear you have no idea about academics, so please don’t comment on it. You are just making yourself stupid.

Your analogy of BYU Hawaii is so bad it’s the same as me telling everyone, “whoa everyone, come check out my valiant or my yugo!”

I bet you don’t get the last insult.

You got more than the rest of the town? More what? Ukus? Unemployment? Welfare? Dumb People? Government Assistance? What do you have more of?

It’s definitely not high achieving students based on your test scores. So keep bragging about HS football, that is all you got. And once they hit their 20’s it is all downhill. That is sad!

Mocking other people because of your jealousy is a reflection of your narrow mindedness. Your comments has been well received and meaningless because life is happy and goes on for the people of Red Raider country. UH wasn’t rank in the US News, the most credible source for university rankings so it’s no big deal…BYU-Hawaii is still a credited university and people are getting a higher education..that’s what counts but I guess that’s not to your standards because you’re so high maka maka. You need to go and associate yourself with the true genuine and mumble people and it’s not only about football…you’ll get to be a better person instead always being so negative.

Kahuku is the first american school to do the maori haka, and after the mainland schools copied Kahuku we made our own haka specifically for Kahuku red raiders, now that is original.

Siuaki Livai created the saying “RR4L” now you see all hawaii schools copying…trojan4L, saber4Life, crusader4life.
