6:45 p.m.
I’m going to attempt keeping statistics, shooting video and live blogging for the varsity game. Please forgive if I don’t blog immediately. I’m going to try anyway.

As you can see (photos below), they’ve spruced up the facility here at Carleton Weimer Field. The field is lush and marked for every yard, the first time I can remember. There are, as Red Raiders coach Lee Leslie promised, 36 flags at the top of the bleachers.

It’s rare to see any other school with the kind of community support Kahuku receives. And it’s not easy to beat their concession stand. I got the beef stew bowl (thumbs up!) from Tita’s Grill and the honey bread from the boys basketball booth. Nothing like home cooking and passionate fans for Friday night lights.

For the record, it’s halftime of the JV game. Kahuku leads Kapolei 7-0.

7:03 p.m.
Kapolei got a nice cutback run for a touchdown, but the PAT kick was snuffed easily. Kahuku leads the JV game, 7-6.

7:19 p.m.
Kahuku rumbles with a three-back formation and scores its second touchdown. PAT good, Red Raiders lead 14-6 with 6:05 left in the JV game. Note: Clock is running through all first-down conversions in OIA JV games this season.

7:33 p.m.
JV final: Kahuku 14, Kapolei 6.

First Quarter
Kapolei defense pops Kahuku RB Kesi Ah-Hoy and recovers the fumble to set up good field position. QB Alton Julius powers in for a 3-yard sneak, Kapolei 7, Kahuku 0, 8:11.

Kahuku drives to the Kapolei 2-yard line, but the defense stiffens and forces a fourth-down incompletion in the end zone, 5:06.

End first quarter: Kapolei 7, Kahuku 0.

A 49-yard punt return by Keala Santiago sets up a Kahuku scoring drive. Kesi Ah-Hoy lines up in the wildcat and tosses a pass to Wily-Matagi, who lined up as a tight end, for a 4-yard touchdown. PAT is wide left. Kahuku 13, Kapolei 7, 6:01.

Tuli Wily-Matagi hits Chance Maghanoy with a 20-yard strike, PAT good. Kahuku 7, Kapolei 7, 8:20, 2nd Q.

Malcolm Macatiag (I’ll verify this later, but it looked like him #7) with the sack, forced fumble on Kapolei QB Alton Julius. Manaia Atuaia recovers and returns the ball 7 yards for another Kahuku touchdown. Kahuku 20, Kapolei 7, 4:58, 2nd Q.

Kapolei drives the the Kahuku 10-yard line in the final minute, but its final play of the half — a pass from Julius to Anthony Martinez — is stopped at the 5-yard line by defensive back Soli Afalava.

Half: Kahuku 20, Kapolei 7.

Ah-Hoy returns the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards to paydirt. Kahuku 26, Kapolei 7, 11:44, 3rd Q.

Ronald Matautia barges forward for a 5-yard touchdown, Kahuku 26, Kapolei 13, 7:59, 3rd Q.

Nice play-action toss from Julius to Randon Ruiz (6-foot-4) in the corner of the end zone. PAT run fails. Kahuku 33, Kapolei 19, 11:53, 4th Q.

Ah-Hoy on the run again, a nice cutback for a 38-yard touchdown. Kahuku 33, Kapolei 13, 3:16, 3rd Q.

Nice 17-yard play-action toss from Julius to Randon Ruiz (6-foot-4) in the corner of the end zone. PAT run fails. Kahuku 33, Kapolei 19, 11:53, 4th Q.

FINAL: Kahuku 33, Kapolei 19.
