An 0-2 start for either Kalani or Kalaheo in OIA Division-II play would make reaching the playoffs an extremely challenging task. The Falcons have made it each of the past two seasons but have started 0-2 overall for only the second time dating back to 2010. Their two losses are by a total of seven points.

Kalaheo has lost its last five games in league play but scored two touchdowns in the second half last week against defending OIA D-II champion Nanakuli in a 14-point loss. The offense looks to be in capable hands with junior QB Mark Lehrner, who has thrown for 343 yards and three touchdowns without an interception so far.

Scoreboard is not functioning for the junior varsity game that the Mustangs lead 23-0 at half.


Varsity kickoff should be around 8 p.m.

Falcons defense force a three-and-out as Sione Vea gets a big tackle for loss. After a bad punt, Falcons score in three plays as Sean Silas, who missed last week’s game due an injury, scores on a 6-yard run. 7-0 Kalani early.

Lehrner finds his groove and completes four consecutive passes but two false-start penalties by wide receivers kill the drive. Mustangs punt. Punter drops the ball and tries to run but is stopped well short. Special teams hurting Mustangs early. Falcons take over on their 47.

Kalani goes three-and-out as a procedure penalty on first down negates a big play by Kai Reed.

Payton Awaya drops back into a zone and reads the QB’s eyes. Interception by the Falcons. First pick thrown by Lehrner this season.

Falcons drive inside the 20 but Kamani Ah Yat gets the interception for Kalaheo and returns it out to the Mustangs 36.

A roughing-the-passer call on third and long is a bad penalty by Kalani but the Mustangs have to punt from midfield. Six-yard punt.

First quarter ends after a Kalani punt following a three-and-out.

Mustangs putting together their best offensive drive of game. Kaliu Lapera with a nice 18-yard run and then Kennedy Quinn makes a big 15-yard catch on third-and-10. First-and-10 on the Kalani 19. Lapera has a 19-yard TD run called back because of a hold. Two holding penalties and sacks by Sione Vea and Scout Benson force a punt from midfield.

David Dennis with a 36-yard return and Kalani starts from its 49.

Kalani marches 51 yards in 12 plays. Tina hits Kai Reed for a big 16-yard gain and then scrambles for 8 yards on third-and-7 from the 10. Silas in from 2 yards out to make it 14-0 Falcons.


Jaden Richardson has a 32-yard return into Kalani territory called back because of a personal foul.

Jaemi Harris in the game for Kalani and picks up 36 yards on five carries. Seth Tina bobbles the third-down snap and it’s fourth-and-6 from the 15. Kalani goes for it and Tina hits Tyson Tagami for a 15-yard TD pass to make it 21-0.

Vea is having a monster game for the Kalani defense. Four tackles for loss w/ 2 sacks. And he does it again. Vea sacks Lehrner at the 1. Third sack. Mustangs punt.

Kalani turns it over on downs after driving inside the 20. Kalaheo gets a big 13-yard pass from Lehrner to Ah Yat and then Leo Garza-Tafua rumbles for 12. Lapera rips off a 12-yard run and a PI call on Kalani puts the ball on the 29. Third-and-14 and Lehrner somehow gets by three defenders and scrambles for 18 yards and a first down, making Falcons tacklers miss. Nice run. False start moves the ball outside the 20. Lehrner with a 21-yard TD pass to Kamani Ah Yat for the Mustangs’ first points. 21-6 after XP failed.

Kalani gets a first down on Kai Reed’s fifth reception of the game but then has to punt.

Kalaheo with another costly penalty. A False start on third-and-1 moves it back 5 yards. Incomplete pass and the Mustangs punt.

David Dennis with a great catch down the sideline for a big 38-yard play. Silas has his third TD run, a 14-harder, called back by penalty. Silas into the end zone for the third time tonight on a 4-yard run.
