CLOSING THE BOOK: Kalaheo Mustangs

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs turned in their pads early, but in many ways 2018 marked another season of improvement. The Mustangs earned three wins for the first time since Darrell Poole‘s inaugural season in 2012 and have upped their win total for three years in a row, the first time that has happened since 2006-2008 under Chris Mellor, capped by Kalaheo’s last really good team that started 6-0 and finished 7-3 following back-to-back losses to Campbell. Poole’s 2018 bunch scored only […]

Kalaheo’s Poole hopeful for history-making 2019

By Christian Shimabuku on October 14, 2018

Kalaheo still felt that it had plenty to play for despite being eliminated from OIA playoff contention prior to Saturday night’s matchup with Kalani. Despite ending up just a game behind Kaiser for the fourth and final playoff bid in Division II, the Mustangs sent their 10 seniors out winners with a 22-7 victory over Kalani at Kailua’s Alex Kane Stadium. Two close key losses for Kalaheo (3-7 overall) would have swung its postseason fate. A 28-12 loss to the […]

Football finds former UH LB Blaze Soares again

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2018

Not being involved in football for eight years may be one of the best things that ever happened to Blaze Soares. Now that he’s back — as an assistant coach — he full appreciates how fortunate he is to have rekindled his love of the game. “I fell out of it and wasn’t really in love with the sport anymore,” said Soares, the former Castle and University of Hawaii linebacker, about the time after his college eligibility ended in 2009. […]

Soares making a difference as DC at Kalaheo

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs are starting to look like contenders. It’s not so much that their last two wins were shutouts, it’s more the way they’ve looked while doing it. There is way too much left in the season to tell for sure if Kalaheo will seriously contend for the OIA D-II title. And it’s important to remember that the Mustangs’ two wins are against McKinley and Waialua — two teams who have, much like Kalaheo, usually been near the bottom […]
