GAME NIGHT 9/8: Kapolei/Waianae

No. 9 Kapolei 46, Waianae 0, Final

Kapolei LB Peni Naulu with a 19-yard pick-6 off Waianae reserve QB Kevin Poepoe. KAPOLEI 46, WAIANAE 0, 3:48, Q4.

The freshman, Gomez, with a nice RPO pass to Keoki Kaluhiwa for a 21-yard TD. PAT is blocked again by Thompson-Avilla. I like this guy! That’s two blocked PATs by him. KAPOLEI 39, WAIANAE 0, 6:06, Q4.

Lopes with a nice pass to Ponokamaka Kealoha-Idica for 15 yards, but he’s sacked by Burkel — his third sack — and on the next play, flushed from the pocket and throws his third pick. Teriq Lacaden returns the ball 16 yards to the Kapolei 37, 9:12 to go in the fourth.

Another Lopes pass hangs a bit and is swiped at the 35 by LB Bubba White for a pick-6. I have to wonder if Lopes’ arm is tired and/or banged up because he had a lot of zip on his passes until the last two. PAT is blocked by Thompson-Avilla. No quit in the Seariders. KAPOLEI 33, WAIANAE 0, 10:51, Q4.

———–

The quarter ends with an interception by DB Isaac Sheridan on a hanging sideline pass from Lopes after a Waianae time out. Sheridan makes it interesting, breaking two tackles, cutting from the right sideline to the left for a 32-yard return to the Waianae 11-yard line. Correction: the ball has been moved back to the Kapolei 40, probably by penalty. Untimed down and Christian Rapis, who started at QB to begin the season before an injury, runs for 7 yards to end the quarter officially.

Freshman Mason Gomez takes over at QB for Kapolei, three and out, punt. Waianae ball at its 27, :06 left in the third.

Waianae drive ends with an INT by Landon Shove, who has been an active player tonight.

Hurricanes drive to the Waianae 14, stall out, and Fonoti’s second field goal is good from 32 yards out. KAPOLEI 27, WAIANAE 0, 4:29, Q3.

Waianae drives to the Kapolei 47, turnover on downs with 7:04 left in the third.

The ‘Canes drive 57 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 16-yard toss from Bailey to Stokes, who was wide open at the goal line. KAPOLEI 24, WAIANAE 0, 9:04, Q3.

HALFTIME
Bailey is fascinating to watch. He makes most of the basic throws, but he’s got an arm and some nice touch when needs it. And he’s using ALL of his receivers. He is 13-for-27, 272 yards with two TDs and two picks. He’s got so much upside, just a sophomore. A 6-3 sophomore.

Bailey with his best throw of the night, a nice spiral that has some air under it to De’Zhaun Stribling on the right hashmark. Beautiful. But, after a Kapolei time out, his deep pass to Stribling is picked off by Xaiston Kamehaloha to end the first half.

Waianae with some momentum offensively, but Burkel (6-0, 220) barges in for his second sack. Punt to the Kapolei 31, ‘Canes ball at their 31 with :41 left.

‘Canes end a 14-play drive, aided by two more Waianae offside calls, with a 24-yard field goal by Micah Fonoti. KAPOLEI 17, WAIANAE 0, 2:40, Q2.

Seariders driving, ball at the Kapolei 31 after a pass interference call. Ball moves to the 17 after an illegal contact (to the helmet) penalty on Kapolei. Then the Seariders switch to a Power-I and lose two yards on two runs, and also changed QB to Kevin Poepoe. A third Kapolei penalty on this drive, roughing the passer, helps Waianae move the ball to the 8. Fourth and goal at the 6, Waianae calls two time outs. Then the QB, under center, trips over himself, loses the ball. RB Kaai Tambaoan-Kaeo scoops the ball up, avoids the pass rush and lofts the ball to Thompson-Avilla, who nearly scores before being tackled at the 1. Kapolei ball.

Kapolei drive stalls at the Waianae 35 with a couple of slightly underthrown deep balls. They’re taking their shots. Turnover on downs, Waianae ball early in the second quarter.

———–

Kapolei recovers a surprise on-side kick at the Waianae 48. Junior Heloca snags that bouncing pigskin near the left sideline for the Canes. Four plays later, Bailey launches a spiral to WR Elijah Badoyen on a corner route and he hauls in the over-the-shoulder catch and goes the rest of the way for a 46-yard TD. Wow. KAPOLEI 14, WAIANAE 0, 2:35, Q1.

The Hurricanes need just one play in their third possession to score. Noa Bailey’s screen pass to WR Ikari Stokes turns into a 37-yard TD play. KAPOLEI 7, WAIANAE 0, 3:41, Q1.

Seariders trying some new formations, a little jet-motion shovel-pass action. Nice. But a sack by LB Kevin Burkel of QB Shaydon Lopes ends Waianae’s third series. After a 20-yard punt, Kapolei has the ball at the Waianae 37.

Kapolei takes over at the Waianae 45, but the drive ends at the 24 on a fourth-and-short stand by Waianae. RB Ezekiel Waiolama is stopped a yard short. Waianae ball.

Kapolei is drawing Waianae offside over and over. Second series and a third encroachment by the visitors. But Kapolei punts. Waianae goes three-and-out, bad snap on the punt and punter Zefften Thompson-Avilla runs for it, but gains just two yards and is stopped by Landon Shove, short of the first down marker.

Kapolei has turned the ball over on a slipped release (looper) by sophomore Noa Bailey, ball picked off by Cameron Quijano. He returns it 32 yards to the Kapolei 29, but on the next snap, RB Malik Brown fumbles and Kapolei DL Elijah Kainoa recovers. Crazy.

PRE-GAME
Coin toss: Kapolei is dedicating this game to Michela Haywood, whose older brother Josiah played for the Hurricanes and graduated in 2016. Michela passed away recently. The team named her an honorary captain for this game.

JV final: Waianae 40, Kapolei 10.

Weather is nice. Overcast sky, warm and a bit humid, but no rain in sight.

The Hurricanes are back home after a fun-filled trip to Southern California, where they dined like kings and played lights-out in a 23-14 win over a good Downey squad. Kapolei is 2-2 overall, but 0-0 in OIA Open Division play. Waianae is struggling at 0-3, including 0-1 in OIA Open. However, the Seariders have a habit of bouncing back in recent years. Last season, they were 0-3 before reeling off six wins in a row.
