GAME NIGHT 9/6: ‘Iolani/Kailua

‘Iolani 40, Kailua 13, FINAL

———-

9:53: Seconds ticking off for career win No. 200 for ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look.

9:51: Friel strings together a couple of great passes to Ho-Mook for gains of 24 and 16 yards. But in ‘Iolani territory, he overthrows his man and it’s picked off by the Raiders secondary, Stirling Sakashita with it.

9:46: Hedani goes up the middle again … this time through a gaping hole, and he’s going all the way to the house for the 43-yard score. XP good and ‘Iolani has hung 40 on Kailua. Hedani with two rushing and two receiving TDs tonight.

9:45: ‘Iolani killing clock with Brock Hedani at RB. Lot of extracurriculars going on after each play over, seems like.

9:40: Friel strings together a couple of passes to get up to the ‘Iolani 26, then calls his own number and is GONE. He weaves his way in, making a few men miss, and dives for the right pylon for the 26-yard score. But the XP is no good. 33-13 ‘Iolani.

9:33: Meki Pei’s 30-yard punt return for ‘Iolani helps set up Brody Logan Bantolina’s 1-yard TD plunge.

9:26: Teams trading three-and-outs now. Chong can’t make a third-and-5 completion and Kailua lets it hop back to its 20.

9:23: Friel completes a 7-yard ball to Ho-Mook but it’s gonna go in as a three-and-out for the Surfriders here to begin the fourth. It takes a nice Kailua hop back to the ‘Iolani 32.

9:21: Kailua’s Friel is dropped for a 1-yard loss as the third quarter comes to an end.

9:20: Kailua finally takes over at its 15 after a nice punt.

9:18: And that’s a running into the kicker on Kailua. 5-yard penalty on Kailua instead of 15 for roughing. ‘Iolani to rekick.

9:16: It’s another weird play here, flag on the field. Unsportsmanlike conduct called on ‘Iolani, which gets backed up 15 to its 35. Raiders had tried to quick punt it and one of the officials was in the way. Somebody apparently yelled at the ref and got flagged.

9:12: It’s a three-and-out right back for Kailua, which punts it and it’s fair caught at the Kailua 45.

9:08: ‘Iolani goes three-and-out and punts, and it actually stands up this time. Short return by Kailua to its 13.

9:05: Kailua at least gets the punt off this time. It’s a short one, though, 23 yards. ‘Iolani takes over at the Kailua 43.

9:04: Another bad snap for Kailua, this one on an active drive, mightve just hamstrung Kailua again. That one was for a loss of 16. Ouch.

9:01: ‘Iolani again capitalizes on a special teams miscue on the Surfriders. With the fresh chains. It’s Chong to Manuel to get into the red zone for 25 yards. Then it’s Chong to Hedani for his second receiving TD tonight from 10 yards, and third TD overall.

8:56: ‘Iolani punts for the first time tonight and Samson Rasay fields it in space. He fields it at the 12, goes to the right sideline with a ton of blockers in front of him and gets all the way to the ‘Iolani 46. … But now a penalty is called on Kailua very late. ‘Iolani snapped it early when Kailua had too many guys on the field for Kailua, points out Arnold Martinez. Woooooow. First down ‘Iolani at Kailua’s 46. It’s unclear why that was a 15-yard penalty instead of just 5.

8:53: Kailua brings the house on the first play from scrimmage this half and Chong is dropped for a loss of 11.

8:52: CBS Sports Radio’s Mark Veneri, up here with me in the booth, rightly pointed out there were only two penalties in that first half. Wow. Of course, now we’re destined for a bunch. … including on the second-half opening kickoff right there. ‘Iolani is up to its 40 now.

8:51: Kailua kicking off to ‘Iolani to begin this second half, left to right.

8:35: Chong is 12-for-17 for 131 yards and a TD for ‘Iolani. Friel is 8-for-14 for 64 yards and a TD for Kailua.

8:30: After all that, Chong takes a knee 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Halftime, Raiders up 19-7.

8:29: Kailua incensed as ‘Iolani granted a timeout with 2 seconds left. ‘Iolani was walking off the field for halftime a moment ago.

8:28: Officials conferring after ‘Iolani tried to run the clock all the way out before punting. But looks like there should be a handful of seconds put back on the clock. Delay of game called on ‘Iolani.

8:26: A couple of short runs by Hedani and Kailua burning its last two timeouts looking to get the ball back with a handful of seconds left in the half.

8:23: That was a 92-yard drive by Kailua. Wow.

8:22: Cameron Friel uncorks a bullet on a quick slant to Raynen Ho-Mook, who bobbles it … then comes down with it for the 6-yard score. Kailua on the board! Morgan Jones is good on the extra point and it’s 19-7 ‘Iolani late in the half.

8:20: Kailua had 10 straight plays with positive yardage to get into the red zone. Now the Surfriders face a 4th and 5 from the 6.

8:13: Kailua begins this drive on its 8, but Samson Rasay has gotten his team into ‘Iolani territory with two huge runs up the middle, for 20 and 13 yards.

8:09: ‘Iolani quickly takes advantage of another Kailua miscue. ‘Iolani converts a 4th and 4 from the 34, and a play later Chong lobs an 18-yard screen pass to Brock Hedani, who finds the end zone for the second time tonight. XP good. 19-0 Raiders.

8:04: Ouch. Kailua with a case of the dropsies right now. Friel hitting some open receivers, but they aren’t able to come down with it. A fourth and 11 … and it’s another bad snap, this one low. Lahaina Kane can’t do anything with it when he scoops it up and ‘Iolani takes over at the Kailua 40.

8:01: First quarter ends with Kailua on the move into ‘Iolani territory. Cameron Friel has completed five passes so far on this drive.

7:55: Excellent scramble and patience by Jonah Chong, who throws a dart to Manuel at the 1 just before he ducks out of bounds. Next play, it’s a 1-yard TD run up the middle for Brock Hedani. XP good by Manuel and it’s 12-0 Raiders.

7:49: ‘Iolani moving the ball quickly on its second drive. Raiders successfully mixing in some run to their spread passing game. We have a stoppage of play here on the Kailua 20. I’m not entirely sure what this stoppage is for.

7:42: A very quick three-and-out for Kailua goes from bad to worse when the long snap is high, and is tipped off the hands of the Surfriders punter. It bounces out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That’s a quick 5-0 lead for ‘Iolani, which now receives the ball. Kailua kicked into the wind and ‘Iolani starts at its 43.

7:39: ‘Iolani moves the ball upfield behind QB Jonah Chong, who goes 5-for-8 on the Raiders’ opening drive. The drive stalls at the Kailua 27 … and that’s well within the range of kicker Wailoa Manuel, who connects from 45 yards out. Wow. That had plenty of distance.

7:31: Samson Rasay gains 5 and 4 yards on the first two plays of the game, but Kailua QB Cameron Friel passes a little behind his man on 3rd and 1, and Kailua opts to punt.

7:28: ‘Iolani kicking off to Kailua, right to left … it’s a touchback by a mile.

7:19: Bit of a stiff breeze on the field tonight.

7:12 p.m.: Looks like this game will start right on time at 7:30. Kamehameha beat Kailua’s JV squad, 9-6.
