GAME NIGHT 9/20: Roosevelt/Kaimuki

Kaimuki 28, Roosevelt 26, FINAL

———-

9:55: And there’s the game-sealer as Koby Moananu comes down with Sky Ogata’s ball thrown deep into double coverage with 18 seconds left. Ballgame.

9:54: And it’s an UGLY punt that goes for only 6 yards up to the 50. Ogata has 27 seconds left to try to get into field goal range, no timeouts.

9:53: This is strange as Kaimuki has a delay of game after Asuega-Fuulaau is stopped for another loss of 1. Play resuming now and Kaimuki punting with 33 seconds left.

9:50: Kaimuki goes to Naomas Asuega-Fuulaau to try to put this game away, but he’s losing yardage right now. Kaimuki backed up to the 50 and burns its last timeout with 1:11 left. Neither team with a timeout. It’s third and 21 coming out of this.

9:47: CLUTCH third down throw by Jayden Maiava for a fresh set of downs up 20 yards at the Roosevelt 39. Two minutes left.

9:45: Roosevelt burns its last timeout after a Maiava 4-yard keeper on first down to get to the 40. They gotta hope for a stop right here with 3:29 on the clock.

9:43: Yikes. Kaimuki almost fumbles away the squibbed kickoff but Avin Tanioka pounces on it. Bulldogs ball on their 36.

9:41: The tying 2-point conversion is NO GOOD as Ogata tosses it for Aalona Monteilh, who looks like he has it but can’t come down with it. Ouch. Roosevelt remains down by two with 4:03 left.

9:40: Roosevelt scores in an absolute hurry, just a minute off the clock to go 74 yards. Ogata throws off the defense with a draw play and Myka Kukahiwa goes right up the middle untouched for 34 yards and the score. Looked like the secondary had a chance at him but seemed confused. Roosevelt calls timeout to set up a 2-point conversion …

9:36: Well, that was curious. Kaimuki does a wildcat variation with Naomas taking it …and losing 3. Roosevelt ball from its 26, looking to drive for the tying score plus the 2-point conversion with under 5 minutes to play.

9:33: Kaimuki calls timeout preparing to line up a 40-yard field goal on fourth-and-11. 5:02 remaining.

9:31: Kaimuki has flipped the field and is looking for more.

9:23: The lengthy drive ends when 8 picks off 8 … Koby Moananu snares Sky Ogata’s ball at the Kaimuki 12. Second pick thrown by Ogata tonight.

9:21: Roosevelt drive still underway a minute into the fourth now, up to the Kaimuki 35. Ogata slinging passes.

9:15: The snap is low and punter Jonah Faasoa only has enough time to pick it up and shank-punt it for a gain of 10 yards. Roosevelt ball at its 42.

9:14: Kaimuki assessed a holding penalty for a loss of 20. Drive killer.

9:09: Sky Ogata goes 5-for-6 on the drive and finds Kolea Pa-Macalino for the first three times of the night during the sequence, including on the last two plays for 18 and then 3 yards. The latter scores it near the left pylon. But the XP is no good, wide left, and it’s Kaimuki still leading by eight, 28-20.

9:04: Ogata showing that playmaker ability again for Roosevelt, completing a 12-yard pass then scrambling for 23 into Kaimuki territory. Feels like the Riders have barely had the ball tonight.

9:00: After a false start pushes it back to the 34, Jayden Maiava tosses it up for Lana Kaluna Jr. — he of the recent sack of Ogata — and he goes airborne and extends to snag it at the goal line, hauls it in, and spins over a couple of times in the end zone in a clear view of a ref on the spot. Touchdown, 34 yards. It’s been said already, but Kaimuki looks very, very good tonight.

8:57: Kaimuki’s ground game keeps on churning. Roosevelt calls timeout to try to stem the tide with a fresh set of Bulldog downs at the Riders’ 29.

8:53: Great play by Kaimuki’s two-way man Lana Kaluna Jr., who drops Sky Ogata for the first Bulldog sack tonight. Forces a punt and Kaimuki ball on its 41.

8:50: Maiava looks deep to Moananu for a 32-yard pickup. But the drive stalls there and Kurt Kawamoto attempts a 44-yard field goal. He’s a few yards short, but he’s on-line. Roosevelt ball at the 20.

8:46: It’s not Tanioka, but KJ Navares, who gets up woozy after a few minutes. Thankfully, the bullpen cart isn’t needed.

8:44: Concern for Kaimuki freshman Aven Tanioka, who’s down on the field after the kickoff return to open the second half.

HALF

8:24: Asuega-Fualaau does enough to pick up a first down in the final seconds when Roosevelt was calling timeouts to try to get the ball back. Halftime, Bulldogs leading 21-14. Asuega-Fualaau with 20 carries for 79 yards and two TDs in the half.

8:21: Rains are coming down in buckets now. BUCKETS.

8:19: Here comes the rains again.

8:18: Kaimuki’s return is very short up to the 9. Bulldogs have 54 seconds until the half.

8:16: And … there’s the jolt Roosevelt needs to get back in this thing. Shepard Kekahuna takes the kickoff return at the 11, goes up the middle into heavy traffic, somehow keeps his feet, and bursts ahead and to the right into open space. He catches a timely block or two and goes ALL THE WAY for the 89-yard kickoff return TD. Rough Riders back within a point. This thing has been electric both ways.

8:14: Wow oh wow. Jayden Maiava drops a dime on a rope to a diving Koby Moananu through a very tight window by the left pylon, and it’s a 23-yard TD. Extra point is good and that’s 21 straight points for the homecoming hosts.

8:12: Penalties have pushed Kaimuki back out of the red zone. They’ve got 2nd and 21 from the 23 coming up after this Kaimuki timeout.

8:10: Kaimuki is really playing well. Bulldogs up into the red zone again.

8:02: Roosevelt goes three-and-out for the third time tonight. Ogata nearly connected with a couple of receivers but one was broken up across the middle and the second his man caught it out of bounds. Kaimuki ball at the Bulldogs 41.

7:58: Naomas Asuega-Fualaau makes like his idol Marshawn Lynch and goes full BEAST MODE on the Roosevelt secondary. He runs up the middle into a DB and sheds him like it was nothing, spins to the left and takes it in for the 21-yard touchdown, his second of the night. XP is good and Kaimuki went from down a TD to up one in the span of a couple minutes.

7:56: Bulldogs with a real chance to do some damage here as Avin Tanioka picks off Ogata’s pass into triple coverage. He returns it all the way to the Rough Riders 28.

7:54: Kaimuki has ANSWERED. A short pass plus a facemask call on Roosevelt gets Kaimuki a fresh set of downs in Roosevelt territory. Then Maiava goes long to Lana Kaluna Jr. near the left pylon for a 33-yard gain. That sets up Naomas Asuega-Fualaau’s 2-yard touchdown run. Tie game.

7:46: HUGE yards-after-contact pickup by Jonah Faasoa, who keeps Kaimuki’s drive alive on third-and-15 by carrying three men with him over the first-down marker for the 17-yard pickup. Ball at midfield as the second quarter starts.

7:40: After a hold to begin the drive sets up first-and-22, Sky Ogata finally gets rolling. He completes three straight passes, capped with a 13-yard scoring strike to Chase Akana on some play action.

7:35: Neither team with any explosive plays yet. A couple of Asuega-Fualaau runs yield short yardage and QB Jayden Maiava goes incomplete on a medium-range pass. But it’s a short punt and Roosevelt takes over at the Kaimuki 36.

7:33: Roosevelt punt has Kaimuki starting its second drive from its 14.

7:32: It’s a very quick three-and-out again for Roosevelt. Rough start for the Rough Riders. Sky Ogata not connecting with his receivers (he’s 1-for-4).

7:30: Kaimuki shows off its ground game behind Naomas Asuega-Fualaau. The Bulldogs get just inside Roosevelt territory and have to punt … it’s a fake! But punter Jonah Faasoa gets only back to the line of scrimmage when he needed 7. Roosevelt ball.

7:23: It’s a three-and-out to start the game for Roosevelt, in a game where there are supposed to be plenty of offensive fireworks. A holding call on third down set up a long conversion try and Sky Ogata went incomplete. Kaimuki at its 25.

7:20: Shepard Kekahuna with a very nice return out to the 48. He had a spin move and a half-hurdle during that.

7:18: Kaimuki wins the toss and will defer to the second half. Roosevelt up first, going left to right.

7:16: We’re actually starting EARLY tonight. Will wonders never cease?

6:45: Looks like the varsity game might start a little earlier than the 7:30 scheduled time.

6:44: Final JV score, Roosevelt 43, Kaimuki 0

6:37 p.m.: Roosevelt JV is putting a hurtin’ on their Kaimuki counterparts. It was 43-0 at halftime, thankfully running clock for the whole second half.
