GAME NIGHT 8/20: Kalani/Kaimuki

Six more games on Oahu scheduled for Saturday including a couple of afternoon tilts involving neighbor island teams. Let’s get to it.

FOURTH QUARTER

Sheets of rain are just pounding away right in the face of Kaimuki which starts from tis 25. Brutal conditions into the wind to try to make this comeback happen. Third-and-8 from the 27. Jordan Cooper with the big tackle. Clock runs. Fourth down. Incomplete. GAME. Kalani will win 26-22.

Ikaika Andaya with a 59-yard kick return to the 20. Andaya with a 13-yard reception to the 7. Second-and-goal from the 5. Ikaika Holden breaks two tacklers and just gets in. 5-yard TD run. Kalani ahead 26-22, 1:11, Q4.

Daniel Nguyen with a 15-yard punt return. Bulldogs start on own 47 down five with 3:13 left. Seei-Cleveland to the 50 and a huge hit by both runner and tackler. Both teams lying out now. Low snap and Solomon has it. He has an open receiver. It’s Nguyen. Nguyen with one man to beat. GONE. 50-yard TD. 2-pointer is good. Kaimuki in front, 22-19, with 2:20 left.

Kalani stuffed twice for a loss of 4. Third-and-14. Getting very intense on the field. Tina-Sobarano overthrows a receiver. Three-and-out.

Last chance for Kaimuki. Fourth-and-20 at the 21 with 5 minutes remaining. Solomon over the middle finds Saia Maiava who gets right near the marker. They measure. First down for 20 yards at the 1. Ieke Seei-Cleveland 1-yard TD run with 4:51 remaining. 2-point conversion is no good. Another thriller down to the wire between Kalani and Kaimuki.

Kaimuki turns it over on downs.

THIRD QUARTER

A big kick return gives the Bulldogs first-and-10 at the Kalani 30 as we end the third quarter.

Kalani gets the ball back quickly after forcing another Kaimuki three-and-out. Daligon with a big 42-yard reception to set up first-and-goal inside the 5. A holding call brings it back to the 14. Faimealelei and Paama both slowed by injury on this drive for Kaimuki. Third-and-goal from the 26 and Tina-Sobarano hits the post to Jaemi Harris for the 26-yard TD. 19-8, 46 seconds left, third quarter.

Slant is a tad behind the receiver, tipped, and picked off by Cody Uehara. He takes his second pick of the game 25 yards back to the house. Touchdown Falcons, who are in the lead for the first time tonight. 2-point try is no good. 4:29

Bad news for the Bulldogs as Joseph, who had a pick in the end zone and the kick return for a TD, is hurt on a play. Very slow walking off after staying down for a couple of minutes. Harris with a 15-yard reception on third-and-14. Harris with a 5-yard reception on third-and-6 to set up fourth-and-1 but Kalani jumps. Falcons will punt.

Kaimuki three-and-out.

After a short kick and a personal foul, Kalani starts on the Kaimuki 38. Seth Tina-Sobarano finds Randy Daligon wide open for a 30-yard TD. Kick is blocked. 8-6, 9:56.

After no scoring in the first half, Calton Joseph returns the opening kick of the third quarter 81 yards for a touchdown. 2-point conversion is good. 8-0 just 14 seconds in.

SECOND QUARTER

Kalani will get one last shot starting at the Kaimuki 44 with 1:03 remaining. Ikaika Holden with a 33-yard catch to the 11 but a hold on the next play brings it all the way back to the 30. Pass to Harris for 9 yards and Kalani calls time with 24 seconds left. Tina-Sobarano gets out of pressure and he’s off to the races..inside the 10..the 5..saving tackle at the 2 with 12.5 seconds remaining. Kalani with one timeout. Holden runs it but BIG stop by sophomore Sama Paama. Falcons call last timeout with 6.7 seconds remaining. Tina-Sobarano tries to escape and should throw it away but Paama brings him down for the sack in bounds. Halftime. 0-0

Seei-Cleveland with a 19-yard reception but he gets up slowly and walks off. Bulldogs punt with 1:10 left.

Ikaika Andaya with a 31-yard reception and Kalani again threatens. A 7-yard pass to Harris makes it fourth-and-5 from the Bulldogs 23. Kaimuki jumps offsides to give up a first down but Calton Joseph gets the pick in the end zone on the next play.

Bulldogs start on their 20. Game-changing play as Cody Uehard picks off a pass at the Kalani 47 and returns it inside the 10 but no. A block in the back on the return brings it all the way back to the Kalani 41.

Faimealelei with his second sack but then the QB rips off a 20-yard run to the Bulldogs 25. Gage Quinabo-Reis can’t haul in a nice pass from Tina-Sobarano that would have gone for six. Another drop on the next play. I’ll tell you what, Tina-Sobarano has made some nice throws from the pocket. Kalani will punt.

Bulldogs start on the 20 going into the wind. Three-and-out. Both offenses struggling.

DL Ricci Moon gets two sacks and another tackle for loss in a span of four plays to blow up that Kalani drive. Punt goes into the end zone.

FIRST QUARTER

Falcons start on the Bulldogs 45. Quarter ends with a face-mask penalty on Kaimuki putting the ball on the Bulldogs 25.

DL Daniel Laufenberg shaken up on a play for Kaimuki. Heavy rain falling now. DL Torey Faimealelei with a sack. Falcons punt from their 32 into the wind. Bulldogs fumble punt and Cody Uehara recovers for Kalani.

Seei-Cleveland gets a big 24-yard reception but the drive stalls out inside the 30. Solomon misses two open receivers.

Falcons move into Bulldogs territory after a personal foul but just miss a deep bomb on third down. Punting from its 46.

Jordan Solomon, who set the single-game Kaimuki passing record last week with 331 yards in an OT win over Waialua, starts at QB. Kaimuki ran it 55 of 70 plays but starts with three runs by Ieke Seei-Cleveland for 12 yards. Manoah Moniz sacks Solomon on third down and the fourth-down pass is incomplete. Turnover on downs.

Seth Tina-Sobarano starts at QB for Kalani. A holding call wipes out that drive and it’s a three-and-out.

Kalani will receive to start the game.

The Falcons saw some offensive sparks in a loss to Pearl City with 224 passing yards by Seth Tina-Sobarano. Ikaika Andaya had four receptions for 152 yards and a TD. The Bulldogs, though, were aeronautic in an overtime win over Waialua. Jordan Solomon passed for a school-record 331 yards and three TDs, connecting with seven receivers. Fifty-five of Kaimuki’s 70 plays from scrimmage (79 percent) were passes, keeping Andries Toussaint (seven receptions, 107 yards), Daniel Nguyen (six, 102, three TDs) and Saia Maiava (six, 80) busy all game long.

History: Kaimuki leads the series 26-2 but Kalani pulled off a rare win in 2014 before losing a heartbreaker, 21-20, last year. The Falcons have had success on the ground against the Bulldogs, with Sean Silas going for 192 yards last year and Ace Faumui gaining 180 the year before. Kaimuki has had nearly as much success on the ground against the Falcons, with Billy Masima hitting 183 yards against them last year. Neither team has ever had a receiver go over 100 yards against the other.
