GAME NIGHT 10/7: Kailua/Moanalua

The OIA D-I playoffs continue with a doubleheader today at Skippa Diaz Stadium.

Here is our game preview of Kailua/Moanalua.

Kim takes the handoff for no gain. Kailua takes its last timeout with 56 seconds left. Au takes a knee on second down. Another knee and that’ll do it. Moanalua advances to the quarterfinals to face Mililani next week.

 

Ho-Mook complete to Gaege Kupahu for 5 and he gets out of bounds. Swing to Shane Kalawai for 8 first down. Back to Kupahu for 4 to the Kailua 41. Incomplete on second down. Empty backfield for Kailua. Delay of game on the Surfriders brings up third and 11 at the 36. Incomplete. Fourth down coming up with 1:13 left. Pass to Wright falls incomplete, he might have been short anyway. Moanalua ball with 1:09 left.

Kim runs for 8 on third down to the Kailua 49. Kim now dropped for a loss of 2. Timeout Kailua with 2:17 left. Surfriders have one left. Third and 4 coming up. Au’s pass is tipped at the line of scrimmage and Moanalua will punt. It’s nearly blocked, Au gets the kick away. Kailua ball at its 24 with 2:04 left.

Ho-Mook’s first-down pass is nearly intercepted but dropped. He has a receiver open on the right side but can’t connect, third and 10. Throw over the middle to Wright falls incomplete. Drive took just 13 seconds so Kailua lines up to punt again. Timeout Moanalua. Na Menehune have one left. Teramoto takes the snap and rolls right. He can’t turn upfield and Moanalua takes over at its 43. 3:13 left.

Kim takes a turn running the ball for Moanalua and picks up 2. Au looks deep but it’s incomplete. He drops back again and is sacked by Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo back at the 13. After an offside penalty on Kailua, Au’s line drive punt appears to hit a player and Henderson pounces on it for Moanalua. Officials rule Kailua ball at the Moanalua 41. 3:34 left.

Micah Kim shoots in to drop Cameron Dudoit-Kamai for a loss of 5. Ho-Mook scrambles for 3. Third and 12 coming up. False start Kailua. Ho-Mook fires over the middle and has two receivers in the area but neither can make the catch. Teramoto lines up to punt, but Moanalua called for encroachment. Surfriders kick it away and its a touchback. Moanalua ball 5:31 left.

Ezra Grace picks up 1 on a wildcat keeper. Delay of game before second down.  Au swings it out to Spencer who’s dropped for a loss of 9 by La’a Rusell. On third and 23, Au scrambles and is sacked by Teramoto at the 4. Na Menehune punt from the end zone. Farley returns it to the Moanalua 23. Illegal block moves it back to the 30. Kailua ball 7:32 Q4.

Solomon Farley returns the kickoff to the Kailua 41 to end the third quarter. After a gain of 4, Moanalua’s Micah Kim comes up with a tackle for loss of 4. Ho-Mook keeps it on third and 10 and picks up 3. Surfriders punt. Moanalua ball at its 22, 9:56 Q4.

Au sets up the throwback screen to Makana Spencer who jukes a defender downfield and gets all the way to the Kailua 3 for a 50-yard gain. No gain on first and goal. Timeout Kailua. Spencer takes a handoff and stretches for the goalline but is marked short. Defensive lineman Tupu Alualu enters the Moanalua backfield and takes the handoff, but he’s stuffed by Teramoto. Fourth and goal coming up after a Moanalua timeout. Griffin Motas comes in and drills an 18-yard FIELD GOAL. :06 Q3.

Three perimeter runs nets Kailua 5 yards and the Surfriders punt. Fair catch near midfield. 2:49 Q3.


Au scrambles for a first down on third and 2. Amaziah Williams sacks Au to bring up third and 17. Au bounces back with a 25-yard completion to Drayden Von Oelhoffen to the Kailua 46. Third down pass broken up by Ralph Laurence Castillo, who is shaken up on the play. Fourth and 6 at the Kailua 42 and Moanalua will punt and the kick goes out of bounds at the 10. 5:15 Q3.

Kailua will receive to start the third quarter. Sophomore Raynen Ho-Mook takes over at QB for the Surfriders. Rasay gets behind pulling tackle Sione Veikoso for a gain of 12. On third and 10, Rasay picks up 5. Teremoto in to punt. Ezra Grace fair catch at the Moanalua 23.

Looks like Weber is injured on the Kailua sideline. Kailua coach Joseph Wong and Moanalua’s Savaii Eselu went over to check on him laying down on the sideline with trainers putting an air cast on his right leg. Ambulance now on the track. Surfriders, who spent halftime in the end zone, return to the sideline as Weber is loaded into the ambulance. Start of the second half delayed with the ambulance still on the track.

Moanalua picks up a first down on a 6 yard completion. Au scrambles and finds Drayden Von Oelhoffen for 18 yards to the Kailua 48. But Taylor Tagupa sacks Au to end the half.

Kaohi sacks Weber, who gets rid of the ball and is called for intentional grounding. Moanalua calls timeout before Kailua’s third-and-16 at midfield. Deep ball down the middle is broken up. Looked like early contact but no flag. Teramoto’s punt downed at the Moanalua 23. 0:36 Q2.

Au completes a 12-yard pass to get Moanalua out to the 20, but the next three plays go backward. Spencer loses a fumble on third down but Na Menehune recover and Moanalua lines up to punt from its 8. The kick is muffed but the Surfriders recover at the Moanalua 44 with 1:10 left in the half.

Kailua can’t do much with the field position and punts from the Moanalua 42. Teremoto’s punt goes out of bounds at the 8. 3:23 Q2.

Makana Spencer picks up 7 yards on his first carry then loses 2 on a stop by John Sniffen. Bruddah Spencer-Choy Foo breaks up the third down pass and Moanalua will punt. Rasay fields it at the Kailua 27 and jets up the sideline 35 yards. Kailua ball at the Moanalua 38. 5:32 Q2.

 

Kailua picks up its first first down of the game on a tough Rasay run for 14 yards. On third-and-5, Rasay takes the direct snap and picks up 10 yards around the right side to the Moanalua 19. Weber fakes a toss and goes up top to Shane Kalawaia Jr. TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. PAT good to tie it up again. 7:11 Q2.

 

Moanalua forces a three and out and takes over at its 32 after Alika Teramoto’s punt. Au completes his first pass of the game, 10 yards to Ezra Grace to end the first quarter. Moanalua faces fourth and 1 at the 49 and tries to go quick. Williams takes the handoff and Teramoto makes the stop for a loss of 1. Kailua ball. 10:01 Q2

 

Tre’quan Henderson fields the kickoff at his 4, circles back toward the end zone then finds a crease and it up the sideline. Kailua’s Tanner Wright has a shot at catching him but Henderson steps out of the tackle and he’s gone. 96 yards TOUCHDOWN MOANALUA. PAT good. 3:11 Q1.

Williams stopped for a loss of 3. Holding call on second down pushes Moanalua back to the 28. Third down pass is intercepted by Dakota Kadooka. But pass interference wipes out the play. Third and 13 Moanalua. Nicholas-Alexandre Au is sacked and loses the ball. Leighton Russell takes it back 43 yards. TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. PAT good. Both defense have accounted for the scoring so far. 3:32 Q1.

Rasay picks up 4 then takes it off left side and fumbles again. Jesse Kaohi recovers for Moanalua. Na Menehune ball at their 46.

Michael Williams picks up 5 yards on two carries and a third-down pass is nearly intercepted, then nearly caught before falling incomplete. Moanalua punts and Rasay brings it back to the Na Menehune 45. 5:45 Q1.

Rasay takes two handoffs for no gain, then loses 2 and the Surriders punt. Moanalua takes over at its 18. 6:58 Q1.

Cole Weber starts at QB for Kailua. Holding penalty on a bubble screen pushes the Surfiders back to the 24. Samson Rasay picks up 6 to bring up fourth-and-6. Rasay get the handoff again and loses the ball. Ethan Feguis-Tavares scoops it up at the 19 and takes the distance. TOUCHDOWN MOANALUA. PAT good. 9:13 Q2.


Moanalua receives the opening kickoff and a bobble results in Na Menehune starting at their 9. After an incomplete pass and a short run, a third down pass is broken up by Ralph Laurence Castillo. The Moanalua punt bounces back to the Na Menehune 19.

Kailua and Moanalua about to get started at Skippa Diaz Stadium. Winner faces Mililani in the quarterfinals next Friday. The Surfriders dominated the first meeting between the teams, a 44-0 win on Aug. 11 at Radford.
