PIAA Spring Letter of Intent Day

By Paul Honda on April 18, 2013

Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance and Elks Lodge of Waikiki hosted a letter of intent signing ceremony on Wednesday morning. More than 30 signees participated in the event. Among the seniors ready to start college was volleyball standout Kupono Fey of Punahou. But unlike his peers, the 6-foot-6 senior was at home. He had contracted pinkeye the day before the ceremony. “I love the team and the coaches,” he said by phone on Wednesday. “The recruiting class is great. A lot […]

HIADA, more from day one

By Jerry Campany on June 8, 2012

(More from the first day of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. Story is in this morning’s edition, just adding some extra info.) HHSAA wrestling official Keith Matsumoto points to Hawaii teams in 1999 and ’02 as sterling examples. “Between those two teams, those girls, we literally could’ve had an opportunity to have four out of four girls in the Olympics from Hawaii. That was my dream. The girls we had were good enough to represent the women’s team […]

HIADA, day 1

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2012

LIHUE — This is the Kauai Marriott Resort, loaded with lush foliage. Bromeliads everywhere. Prominently rising to the sky are 30-foot columns fitting for an emperor or two. A family of nene goose rest comfortably in on the lawn fronting a helicopter rental shop, not far from man-made streams filled with koi. And somewhere, in this mansion-esque setting, the state’s athletic directors have convened to start their annual conference. When the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association event is done by […]

Pestano plus: Kamehameha’s state champ

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2012

(More on Kamehameha wrestler/judooka Dane Paihi Pestano. The feature story ran in this morning’s edition.) Dane Pestano abstains from rice, fried food and soda, but treats himself to a bag of Skittles now and then. At the next level, Pestano expects to cut down to 197 or 184 pounds, which sounds severe. In fact, he got up to 238 in the offseason while his shoulder healed. He dropped weight through workouts and a diet that restricts soda, rice and fried […]
