By Jerry Campany on February 22, 2020

After using wrestling as a refuge, Lahainaluna’s Alicia Frank is one victory away from joining her school’s long list of state champions. Frank, a two-time MIL champion, beat Campbell’s Kili Terukina 8-6 in the final seconds of her semifinal match at 117 pounds to reach her first final. She finished fifth in the tournament last year and had more than her share of adversity to begin the season. “I started rough,” Frank said. “I was going through personal issues and […]

Three-sport star Legend Matautia trying to finish wrestling career on top

By Nick Abramo on February 22, 2020

Legend Matautia knows how to put people down — not with his words, but with his physical strength. Matautia does that during football season. In the fall, he was a senior linebacker for Punahou. This winter, he’s doing it for the Buffanblu wresting team. Matautia — the reigning 220-pound state champion — is one win away from his second crown in the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships. Early Saturday, he pinned Waianae’s Jace Filipo Rodrigues in a mere seven seconds for […]

Later Saturday, Terrell will go against Blaze Sumiye of Moanalua, who pulled off an upset moments earlier. The two combatants in the final are good friends, according to Terrell. In his semifinal match, Terrell was losing 2-1 against Leilehua’s Pookela De Santos, but got an escape with time running out to tie it […]
