GLORY DAYS: Coach Bryson Carvalho and the 2019 Waipahu Marauders

By Nick Abramo on June 29, 2019

SEVENTH IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach who has already been interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed […]

Fiva Tulafale’s dominance sparks Waipahu in upset of Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Sure, it’s 7-on-7, where there is no pass rush. Where Saint Louis, with the state’s best pass rushers, can’t line up and tee off. Yet, it was Waipahu’s tremendous defensive force, Fiva Tulafale, who stepped up in a 28-22 win over the Crusaders at the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament on Saturday. So many questions. Is Tulafale an interior defensive lineman, edge rusher, linebacker or safety? The answer is yes. Waipahu could use him in every possible way this fall, […]

By Nick Abramo on November 10, 2018

It didn’t look too good for the 10th-ranked Waipahu Marauders at halftime. They were trailing 19-7, but somehow found a way to shut out ‘Iolani in the second half and win 20-19 on Friday night in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships in front of their home fans at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex. It turned out to be, as defensive lineman Kealii Barrett said, “A beautiful moment in history.” As he was saying it, […]

Picks by Kapea, Benjamin help Waipahu protect ’94 Block’

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2018

The 94 Block is more than just Waipahu’s district. It’s the gold-painted cement block, with the number attached on front, that represents a turnover chain for Waipahu’s “Humble Hammahz”, as a T-shirt revealed. Deacon Kapea wore it well in victory, and it was well earned. Waipahu’s 20-19 semifinal win over perennial powerhouse ‘Iolani propelled the Marauders into the final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA D-I State Championships. Waipahu will have a chance to win a state crown for the first […]
