For Jobe, it will be a tough act to follow. He replaces Rusty Komori, who retired recently after winning the last 22 boys state championships (during the streak of 25 by the […]

Hall Pass: Kawika Lam

By Jerry Campany on June 6, 2015

It seems like Punahou never loses in tennis, mostly because of athletes like Kawika Lam. Lam won three singles titles and a doubles crown in his four years of prep tennis and for that will be inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. The Punahou boys tennis team won its 25th straight state title this season, with 12 individual champions and 16 doubles champions during the span. That’s a […]

Heaven was the only Saber honored on the first and second teams. Mililani took four spots on the first team and Pearl City took two. Aiea had the other one. The Trojans swept the rest of the OIA West awards, with Haley Fujimori being named […]

Komori is most proud of building character

By Nick Abramo on May 12, 2015

Punahou’s Rusty Komori took the varsity boys tennis coaching job in 1994, and since that time, he never learned what it was like to finish second or worse in the state championship. That’s 22 years of leading the talent-laden Buffanblu to the Hawaii title. That’s what you call supremacy, and for whoever follows Komori in the job, that’s a tough, tough act to follow. It might seem like an easy thing to do. Punahou gets great athletes in all sports, […]

Alcon upsets Lau in state tennis

By Jerry Campany on May 9, 2015

Mid-Pacific’s Skyla Alcon proved she can do it on her own if she has to. The senior upset defending champion Taylor Lau 6-4, 6-3 to secure the girls singles title in the Carlsmith Ball / HHSAA State Tennis Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park. She added that gold medal to the doubles title she won with Cori Cummings last year. Lau knows all about how upsets happen, she beat three-time champ Alyssa Tobita of Mililani in the final last year. […]
