Saints go airborne to beat Wolfpack

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

Maybe this was a turning point for the St. Francis Saints. The immense challenge by Pac-Five. The injuries at running back. The Saints had to extend beyond their comfort zone on Friday night, relying on the aerial acumen of Bubba Akana, who was 22-for-31 for 196 yards, four touchdowns — and no interceptions — in a come-from-behind 35-21 win at Aloha Stadium. It was just one chapter in the evolution of the Saints, who struggled to run the ball consistently. […]

McLeod sets receiving mark in St. Francis win

By Billy Hull on August 12, 2017

Over the first four years of varsity football at St. Francis, the Saints have tried to keep it simple on offense. Establishing a downhill running game has helped St. Francis go from a 1-8 season in 2013 to a 5-3 record in ’16 in which the Saints contended for the ILH Division II crown before losing to Damien. To take that next step, which they hope happens this season, the Saints are opening things up on offense, meaning the ball […]

St. Francis-Leilehua: What a game

By Brian McInnis on August 6, 2017

Here’s hoping the eventual sequel to St. Francis-Leilehua will come close to being as good as the original. That is a tough ask. Saturday night’s game was starved of offense for long stretches and play was downright sloppy at times, but in terms of a heart-pounding finish, you couldn’t have asked for more. Division II St. Francis, still a newcomer to the Oahu football scene, clawed into position for an improbable road upset of an OIA Division I mainstay, marching […]

VIDEO: St. Francis/Kaimuki scrimmage

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2017

Two title contenders from two leagues in Division II met on Wednesday on a sunny, hot field at Kaimuki. St. Francis, which came very close to winning the ILH D-II crown last season, visited a dangerous Bulldogs squad that will contend for the OIA D-II title this fall. It was, all in all, a highlight-filled matchup featuring a first-year gunslinger at quarterback for St. Francis, as well as Kaimuki’s second-year standout at QB, Jordan Solomon.
