GAME NIGHT 8/12: Kauai/St. Francis

Two teams involved in the two closest games last week meet on Oahu at Punahou’s Alexander Field as Kauai, which edged Kamehameha-Hawaii 10-7 last week at Vidinha Stadium, faces St. Francis, which came within 1 yard of beating Division I Leilehua last week in a 13-9 loss.

Saints with fourth-and-1 at the Kauai 21 and they go for it. Dacuycuy picks up a first down and then Bubba Akana finds Shepard Kekahuna for an 18-yard TD. Second TD catch for Kekahuna today.

Third quarter ends on an 11-yard completion from Akana to Dacuycuy.

Running clock now. Aukai Albao has five carries on the drive for 23 yards and picked up one first down but the Red Raiders will punt.

St. Francis ball on its 41. On third-and-30, Jonah Aina-Chaves throws a perfect deep ball into the hands of Lachmann Atoa, who shakes off the tackle and is gone. 79-yard TD pass makes it 35-0 after the two-point conversion.

Two quick incomplete passes and it’s third-and-10. Another incomplete pass and a punt.

St. Francis will receive and start at its 26. Jonah Aina-Chaves in at QB. Pass to Kaleikau good for 14 yards but he’s hit from behind and fumbles and Kauai recovers on the Saints’ 45.

Saints backed up to their 5 with 20 seconds left and they decide to try to pass but Manera is sacked and fumbles. Tapena Tuitupou on the recovery.

Saints ball on their 19. Two passes to McLeod from Aina-Chaves go for 29 yards. McLeod with 103 receiving yards already and that’s a school record for the Saints. St. Francis completes first 10 passes but misfires on next two as a drop and a breakup by Noah Hoopii force a punt.

Nice back-shoulder throw on third-and-5 from Manera to Ruiz to pick up a first down and then Ruiz goes up high to catch a jump ball near the Kauai sideline for a 23-yard catch. Ruiz has some skills at receiver for Kauai. Jaykob Nakaahiki-Young then bobbles a ball but still gets the catch over the middle for 21 yards inside the Saints 30. Fourth-and-1 at the 19 and a pass over the middle is broken up by Wembley Mailei. Turnover on downs.

After a punt of 64 yards by Kauai, Saints bring in Bubba Akana at QB and he hits McLeod for 54 yards on first throw. Bubba Aina-Chaves runs inside the 15 but loses the ball and Kauai recovers on its 6-yard line.

Red Raiders start on their 20 and it’s quickly third-and-9 after a false start penalty. Maika Fernandez with the sack for the Saints to force a three-and-out.

Bubba Aina-Chaves breaks out a 23-yard run. Good looking player for the Saints, who face a third-and-4 at the Kauai 45. Jonah Aina-Chaves finds Scott McLeod open for a 12-yard gain to move the chains. Saints with a steady dose of the run and have second-and-goal at the 9 after an illegal shift penalty and Jonah Aina-Chaves finds Lachmann Atoa open over the middle for a 9-yard TD pass. 14-0, 1:29, Q1. Jonah Aina-Chaves has completed his first six passes.

Kauai starts on its 35 and Jaykob Nakaahiki-Young takes a short pass, breaks two tackles, and rumbles up the field for 30 yards. Noah Ruiz with a catch for 12 yards inside the 20. Third-and-5 on the 14 after the Saints jump early for a penalty. Pass to the back of the end zone and it’s picked off by JJ Paaluhi-Caulk.

Sort punt plus a Kauai penalty and Saints will start on Kauai 28. Jonah Aina-Chaves at QB and Bubba Aina-Chaves at RB. Bubba picks up 13 on the ground running through defenders. After a pass for 9 yards, Bubba Aina-Chaves scores on a 6-yard TD run. 7-0, 9:26


Kauai will receive. Christian Manera at QB. Aukai Albao at RB. Saints force a three-and-out as Manera scrambles and loses 4 yards on third-and-3.

    This kid Bubba at RB looks pretty darn legit. It’ll be Interesting to see how the rotation looks like when their starting RB returns. At this point, looks like they already found a starting RB.
