Golden Hawks playing for ailing coach

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 14, 2015

Motivated by the absence of head coach Ricky Gusman, Nanakuli continued its quest for a third straight Division II state softball title with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Pac-Five at McKinley on Wednesday. Freshman Cheyenne Lute threw a one-hitter and sophomore Mahina Piilani backed her up with a home run, an RBI single and solid play at shortstop to help the Golden Hawks advance to a semifinal matchup with fourth-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Uekawa gives bench players valuable experience

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2015

Coach John Uekawa put his subs in liberally during Maryknoll’s 13-0, mercy-rule victory over Waiakea in the state softball quarterfinals Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. “After the game, I asked the substitutes, ‘How did it feel to play in a state tournament game?’ And I told them how special it is, since some players and coaches on teams never make it to states.” Uekawa also put them in the game so they would gain valuable experience. “They told me […]

Baldwin without a head coach for quarterfinal

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2015

Baldwin was without its head coach in a 7-6 loss to Campbell in the state softball quarterfinals on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Four assistants combined to take over for Steve Morton after he was relieved of his duties last week. Earlier this week, Baldwin athletic director Kahai Shishido, citing the Department of Education’s personnel privacy policy, did not confirm that Morton was fired, as was reported by the Maui News. Several Baldwin parents who did not want to […]

Baldwin’s Kaupe knew this ball was gone

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2015

Nawai Kaupe did something she never did before on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. When she connected with a fastball from Campbell’s Dani Cervantes,Kaupe didn’t have to wonder if it was going over the fence. “Yeah, it’s the only pitch I’ve hit that I knew was gone,” she said after the Bears’ valiant comeback in the state quarterfinals fell one run short, 7-6, to the Sabers. Kaupe’s home run to left field was followed by Lyana Bermudez‘s solo shot […]

LIVE BLOG: Day 1, HHSAA D-I Softball

By Paul Honda on May 12, 2015

Beautiful, breezy afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. I’m always stunned when I hear the occasional complaint about this facility. To me, it’s awesome. You can sit behind home plate, get a nicely elevated view and take in tons of fast action — the nature of fast-pitch softball without a million throws to first — and see quality games. I mean, baseball had it great with access to Les Murakami Stadium and Hans L’Orange Field. Softball gets similar treatment. If […]

Baldwin assistants to coach in place of Morton

By Nick Abramo on May 11, 2015

Steve Morton was let go as head coach of the Baldwin softball team last week. Baldwin athletic director Kahai Shishido declined to discuss the issue directly on the phone Monday, but did say that four assistant coaches — Miles Sakamura, Bernard Kaupe, Danny Pagaduan and Reid Kawabata — will combine their resources to run the Maui Interscholastic League champions in this week’s state tournament. The Bears open the tournament with a quarterfinal matchup at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Oahu on Wednesday […]
