Leilehua still No. 1, ahead of Kamehameha, Campbell

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2018

Math is math. The way it came about is as strange as it gets. Leilehua remains at No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 today despite a loss to then No. 7 Mililani — and despite receiving just one out of 11 first-place votes. The Lady Mules reached No. 1 in the poll last week, a first in recent years. Leilehua beat then-No. 10 Pearl City before losing at home (Kaala Elementary School field) to the Trojans, 5-3. […]

Holes in No. 1 Leilehua’s game hard to find

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2018

There’s little doubt that things are going to get tougher for the Leilehua softball team. After winning the first three games of the OIA West by scores of 16-5, 12-2 and 9-3, how can they not? The Mules are ranked No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 and with good reason. Finding reasons why they shouldn’t be ranked there is mighty tough. Leilehua (3-0) is stacked at the plate and in the field, even though they made four errors […]

Lady Mules, Rough Riders soar in softball top 10

By Paul Honda on March 5, 2018

The Leilehua Mules rule the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 this week. Coming off blowout wins over then-No. 1 Campbell and Waianae, Leilehua (5-1, 2-0 OIA West) landed at No. 1 in the latest rankings released today. The Lady Mules were No. 5 in the preseason top 10 and tied Roosevelt for the biggest jump in week 1. The Rough Riders (4-0-1, 2-0 OIA East) also leaped four spots from No. 10 to No. 6. Roosevelt overpowered Kailua 14-0 and Castle […]

New-look Hurricanes rout defending OIA champ Mililani

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2018

A veteran coach like Keoke Behic has the countenance of a chef undertaking a massive task. Urgency? Check. Patience? Of course. Perspective? Infinite. Kapolei’s 9-2 win over Mililani in the OIA regular-season opener for each team was, first and foremost, just one game. But with the OIA West looking more and more like a newer version of the ILH in recent softball seasons, the win was huge. Beating defending league champion Mililani is a rare feat. Doing it with a […]

Q&A: Kamehameha All-State 1B Dallas Millwood

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2018

The work never ceases, yet Dallas Millwood keeps stepping to the plate. The Kamehameha first baseman has always been the younger one in the bunch, usually with her three softball-playing sisters, playing the sport against older players and teams. Now, she comes off a junior season as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s most valuable player: .528 batting average 29 RBIs, 22 runs, four home runs, .609 on-base percentage and .981 slugging average. She signed a letter of intent to play […]

Defending champ Campbell opens at No. 1

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2018

The Campbell Sabers collected seven first-place votes to open the season at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 today. The three-time defending state champions were 7-2-2 in nonconference play. The Sabers lost to Mililani and Kapolei in preseason, and tied with ‘Iolani and Moanalua. Gone via graduation are position player of the year (catcher) Jocelyn Alo, now booming hits for Oklahoma, pitcher of the year Dani Cervantes and outfielder Cieana Curran — all first-team All-State selections. Returning for […]

2017 Top Stories: Softball’s tectonic shift to OIA West

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2018

In Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Paul Honda wrote about the top 10 prep stories of 2017. You can read it here. Here’s a deeper look at one of the 10 stories. 7. OIA West dominates softball While the ILH has dominated the Top 10 rankings in basketball and volleyball, state softball titles have continued to remain the domain of public-school programs. In D-I girls volleyball, an ILH team has won the state title every year since ’02, when Kahuku took the […]

Behic fired up about coaching Kapolei softball team

By Nick Abramo on September 15, 2017

Keoke Behic is back as a Hawaii softball head coach. This time around, he’ll be guiding Kapolei. Behic is the new Hurricanes coach, replacing interim head coach Stacie Mahoe, who was in charge of the Kapolei squad last season after Tony Saffery stepped down. “The whole reason I even considered going to Kapolei is because I respect Tony Saffery,” Behic said by phone last week. It wasn’t an easy decision. Behic spent the last three seasons as a Campbell assistant […]
