Head referees in soccer have a lot of power. They can give you red cards and yellow cards and they can call for penalty shots against you if you’ve committed a foul in the box. They also keep official scoring, which turned out to be fairly important Saturday night. While watching Mililani beat Kalani 1-0 in double overtime in the OIA title game, it appeared that the Trojans’ goal was the result of a certain player’s cross being redirected into […]

People in the stands at the Castle High field Thursday night saw Mililani’s Marc Matas score with a header on Jarad Choquette’s corner kick for a 1-0 win over Kalaheo in the OIA boys soccer semifinals. What the spectators may not have seen is the jockeying for position that went on seconds before the goal. Mililani had been pounding away all night with shot after shot on Kalaheo’s defense and goalkeeper Jack Bell, but couldn’t put it in. For two […]

Ingredient X prevalent in OIA playoffs

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2015

You can talk about skill and talent and effort in soccer, but Ingredient X is necessary to make it all work. Take Thursday’s OIA semifinals for instance. You would have to be ignoring your surroundings if you didn’t notice it. We’re talking about passion. Let’s start with Kahuku coach Jay Hix. Well, he’s a chirper, and it doesn’t appear that you’d ever be able to say the man isn’t into coaching. Here are just some of Hix’s verbal messages to […]
