Pearl City freshman Sunshine Fontes was honored by Gatorade as the girls soccer player of the year. Fontes led the Chargers to the state title in the winter and was the Star-Advertiser’s first freshman to be named state player of the year. The Gatorade award is independent of the Star-Advertiser’s list and this is the first time in two years the two entities agreed on the player of the year. Punahou senior goalkeeper Tyler Ohata was named the 2015-16 Gatorade Hawaii Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Tuesday. Ohata is the fifth Punahou soccer player to win the award. He led the Buffanblu to a 12-0-3 record and a state championship this past season. He allowed just two goals all season and posted back-to-back shutouts in the state semifinals and final. Kurt Kagawa is the new head coach for the Mid-Pacific boys soccer team, Owls athletic director Scott Wagner announced Wednesday. Kagawa is a former Mid-Pacific intermediate team coach and assistant for the Owls varsity. He has also been a coach for the Bulls soccer club and an assistant with the Mililani varsity team the past two seasons. Kagawa takes over for Jayson Abe, who stepped down recently to take the head men’s coaching position at Chaminade. Abe led the Owls […]
Two weeks after Pearl City won the Division I girls state soccer championship, head coach Frank Baumholtz III kept saying, “I’m still smiling.” And why not?
