Baldwin is legit state boys soccer contender

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2017

It was hard to tell Thursday night which boys soccer state tournament victory was more impressive — Baldwin’s 1-0 win on penalty kicks over Mililani or Kaiser’s 2-1 upset of Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and second-seeded ‘Iolani. So, probably, equally impressive. Both are relative underdogs to win a state title, but Baldwin is carrying the flag for an entire island — and actually all of the Neighbor Islands. No outer-island team has won a boys soccer state crown in Division I. […]

Impressive ‘Iolani girls could be back for more

By Nick Abramo on February 5, 2017

One of the best things about state Division I girls soccer is that one team does not dominate the landscape. Yes, Punahou has the most titles with 11, but it’s been since 2011 that the Buffanblu have ended their season with a win in the big game. Each year, it seems to be a different team that gets hot. Last year, it was Pearl City. This year, it was ‘Iolani. Two years ago, it was Mililani. It’s very hard to […]

Kim-Bustillos, Higgins are soccer MOPs

By Nick Abramo on February 5, 2017

‘Iolani’s Kylee Kim-Bustillos and Hawaii Prep’s Emi Higgins were chosen as the Division I and II most outstanding players from the The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium that ran last week. The Raiders and Ka Makani captured the D-I and D-II championships, respectively. The all-tournament teams are listed below: DIVISION I >> True Dydasco, Punahou >> Kiara Fairbairn, Punahou >> Sunshine Fontes, Pearl City >> Skylar Littlefield, Baldwin >> Cambrie Motooka, ‘Iolani >> […]

Boys soccer state tourney starts Monday

By Hawaii Prep World on February 5, 2017

After ‘Iolani won its fifth state title in girls soccer, the boys’ team will attempt to win its 10th state championship overall and second in four years when The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships kick off Monday with four first-round games. Mililani will host a doubleheader Monday which includes defending state champion Punahou beginning its quest for a repeat. OIA champion Kapolei is the No. 1 seed, followed by the ILH-champion Raiders. The Division II tournament begins Thursday […]

Punahou and ‘Iolani fight for soccer supremacy

By Nick Abramo on February 4, 2017

It’s obvious that the two best teams made it to the girls Division I state tournament final tonight. No flukes getting there. Both ‘Iolani and Punahou scored dominant wins on Friday in the semifinals. The Raiders stopped OIA champion and top-seeded Mililani 3-0, and the second-seeded Buffanblu won by the same score over defending D-I state champion Pearl City. Now the rivals go head-to-head for the third time this season. They tied 1-all and ‘Iolani squeezed out a 2-1 win. […]

Mililani-‘Iolani soccer should be entertaining

By Nick Abramo on February 3, 2017

It’s Friday afternoon and the start of the Mililani vs. ‘Iolani state girls soccer semifinal is about 2 hours away. It should be a good one at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, and may rival the Trojans’ 1-0 victory over ‘Iolani for the 2015 championship. In that one, a super close game was won by the Trojans on kind of a fluke late goal. Both teams are skilled at every position. The edge in speed probably goes to ‘Iolani; the edge […]

Kim-Bustillos, ‘Iolani working for elusive title

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2017

One down. Three big ones to go. On Monday, the ‘Iolani girls soccer team won its state tournament opener 3-0 over Moanalua. And if midfielder/forward Kylee Kim-Bustillos gets her way, there will be three more wins on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, culminating in the Raiders’ first title since 2013. That road is a difficult one, with plenty of top-flight teams left to contend with. But, a good thing to remember about these Raiders (10-0-3) is they haven’t lost a game […]

Mililani, HPA are No. 1 girls soccer seeds

By Hawaii Prep World on January 28, 2017

Hhere are the matchups in both Division I and Division II for the HHSAA/Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer State Championships. Mililani and Hawaii Prep are the No. 1 seeds. HPA is the three-time defending champion in Division II while Pearl City is the reigning D-I champ. Division I Division II
