Hawaii Prep’s Higgins is Gatorade POY

Hawaii Prep’s Emi Higgins was named as the Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year in girls soccer this week. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-9 sophomore forward and midfielder led Ka Makani to an 11-2-2 record and the Division II state championship in 2017. Kapolei alum Hopeau signs professional contract

The Seattle Sounders announced Wednesday that Kapolei alum Shandon Hopeau has signed a professional contract with the club’s reserve team that plays in the United Soccer League. Hopeau, a two-time OIA West player of the year, signed directly from Sounders Academy, where he scored four goals in his first two games. He played with S2 last season and earned a starting job and was good enough during league play that he was invited to train with the Sounders’ MLS squad […]


Punahou’s McKenna tops All-State team

The face of high school boys soccer changed a little bit this year. Punahou’s Duncan McKenna gave his school its fifth player of the year award, and second in a row, but that is where the normalcy ended. McKenna was one of only six seniors named on this year’s Star-Advertiser Stellar Eleven, the fewest ever after nine seniors graced last year’s team. State champion ‘Iolani swept the ILH girls soccer awards that were announced recently. Senior Kylee Kim-Bustillos was named the offensive most valuable player and classmate Kawaiuluhonua Scanlan was named the defensive MVP. Kristin Masunaga was named the coach of the year.
