Kamehameha girls get some breathing room

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2018

The Kamehameha Warriors did something Monday that not many teams in any sport at any level can do. They played a complete game from start to finish. It just so happens that they caught Punahou on somewhat of a bad day and polished off a dominant 2-0 girls soccer victory. The only holes in the Warriors’ performance came in the latter portion of the match when Punahou broke through for three scoring chances, including one glaring opportunity in which Kamehameha […]

Kailua’s OIA D-II title special to Afong

By Paul Honda on January 27, 2018

Malu Afong doesn’t forget easily. Just seven years ago, she and Will Kimura were co-head coaches at Kailua, which won the OIA Division II girls soccer title. Kimura passed away that year, and the success of the Surfriders — they won the D-II title in ’09, as well — meant a move to D-I. Now, back in D-II, the Surfriders are prominent once again. A 2-1 overtime win over Radford tonight gave the Surfriders their first crown since that 2010 […]

Defense is golden as Mililani makes it 3 in a row

By Paul Honda on January 27, 2018

Seven Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championships in 10 seasons. That’s a dynasty for you, at least in the OIA. Mililani’s 2-0 win over a normally explosive Kaiser squad brought home another girls soccer title. That’s a three-peat for the Lady Trojans, who now have a first-round bye in the upcoming Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships. Mililani (12-2) did it with two impressive goals from sophomore Amber Tadeo-Gilbert and excellent defensive chemistry. Tadeo-Gilbert’s first goal was almost impossible […]

Mililani, Kaiser meet for OIA girls soccer title

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 26, 2018

Mililani’s defense helped the Trojans earn a shot at retaining the OIA Division I girls soccer title for a third straight year. Kaile Halvorsen, one of Oahu’s most dynamic scorers, helped power Kaiser into its first league championship game since 2014. The results of Thursday’s semifinal round create an intriguing matchup for the title on Saturday at Kapolei. Mililani has yet to give up a goal in three playoff matches this week and shut out previously unbeaten Pearl City in […]

Kaiser’s Halvorsen no longer a secret

By Billy Hull on January 25, 2018

The leading goal scorer in the OIA this season might not be a name you’re quite familiar with. But you’ll definitely want to be. Kaiser senior Kaile Halvorsen has had a knee injury take away portions of her sophomore season at Punahou and her junior year with the Cougars. She hasn’t competed in the state tournament since she was a freshman and has never appeared on the Star-Advertiser All-State first team. That might shock you when you see her play […]

Kaiser won a coin toss with Kalani and will be the No. 1 seed out of the East in the OIA boys soccer playoffs beginning Jan. 29. The Cougars and Falcons finished with an identical 9-0-1 record in the regular season and played to a 1-1 tie last Wednesday. Kamehameha earns state berth in shootout

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 19, 2018

Missy Moore had barely caught her breath after Kamehameha’s shootout victory over ‘Iolani to clinch a state tournament berth on Friday when the Warriors coach addressed the new format to the ILH girls soccer season. “It’s a lot more stressful,” Moore said as the Warriors’ celebrated a return to states after missing the tournament last year. Kamehameha and ‘Iolani split 1-0 wins in the regular season and closed the schedule at 9-1-1, forcing a playoff for the league’s first-round title […]
