VIDEO: Sunday Morning QB Tua Tagovailoa

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2016

In season, off season, during any season, Tua Tagovailoa is calmly asserting himself. On the field, he is mastering the art of quarterbacking. Practice or game, his reps are identical. Off the field, he leads without noise, simply ushering friends closer to the Lord. This past Sunday, the Saint Louis senior and Alabama commit opened the door to his sanctuary. Even on his day of rest, Tua never stops moving. UPDATE 8/11 Adds final 4 videos.

The game that never was

By Billy Hull on August 8, 2016

It was nice to see a packed John Kauinana Stadium abuzz for an early-season showdown between two top-five teams. It was nice to see Saint Louis QB Tua Tagovailoa, the Elite 11 MVP and Alabama commit, spinning and sprinting away from tacklers like he was controlled by someone that couldn’t decide between hitting the B-button for the spin move or holding down the trigger for turbo speed. It was nice to see the always animated Rod York getting into the […]

GAME NIGHT 8/6: Saint Louis/Mililani

By Hawaii Prep World on August 6, 2016

After a wild opening night in prep football Friday, we have three games scheduled for Saturday on Oahu. It’s going to be hard to top Friday night’s classic between Waianae and Kamehameha, but ranked teams from the ILH and OIA square off again as No. 2 Saint Louis travels to face No. 5 Mililani at John Kauinana Stadium. It’s the season debut for both teams and the first look in 2016 at Saint Louis senior QB Tua Tagovailoa, who is […]

Slade-Matautia is a weapon from any angle

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2016

At 6-foot-1 with lightning-quick reflexes, Isaac Slade-Matautia was, arguably, the most dangerous defender for the Saint Louis Crusaders on the basketball court during the 2015-16 season. A left-hander with solid handles, mid-range accuracy, instinctual passing and shot-blocking, ball-hawking defensive skills, Slade-Matautia fits the bill of a what-coulda-been on the hardwood. He’s not going to miss the game all that much, though. Now, as a 220-pound senior — he has picked up roughly 20 pounds since that long hoops season — […]

Emptying the notebook: Tua Tagovailoa

By Dave Reardon on August 1, 2016

You can read Dave Reardon‘s Sunday Star-Advertiser column on Tua Tagovailoa here. Sunday’s column was on Tua Tagovailoa, the “It” guy of Hawaii high school football, and maybe even the nation. Here are a few outtakes from him and his quarterbacks coach at Saint Louis, Vince Passas: Tua only plays football. “I was playing tee-ball and I hated it. Too slow. Played basketball for fun, still do. I ran track one year.” He said his religion and his family keep […]

Gerald Welch returns ‘home’ to Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on July 12, 2016

Gerald Welch spent last season as an assistant coach to Vavae Tata for the state champion Kahuku football team. This season, he will be back home, so to speak. Welch, one of the top receivers in Hawaii high school football history, is a wide receivers coach under his former head coach Cal Lee at Saint Louis. Not bad. If you are going to take a step down from the state champions, you might as well latch on to the state […]
