3 defensive TDs power No. 1 Crusaders over Sabers

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2018

The top-ranked Saint Louis Crusaders are nearly impeccable. Offense. Defense. Special teams. Offseason reps. Video. It was more of the same quest for perfection in a first-time meeting with Campbell on Friday night. Saint Louis left with a 55-7 runaway, a game that was in running-clock, mercy-rule mode for the entire second half. “We focused on taking their run game. In film study, they did the same run blocking, downfield blocking, as Waianae,” said linebacker Lawai Brown, who had the […]

Saint Louis suffers big drop in USA Today 25

By Billy Hull on September 24, 2018

Back-to-back wins by less than 10 points, including a 30-22 victory over an unranked Kapolei team in the state of Hawaii on Friday, has caused Saint Louis to plummet in the USA Today Super 25 released today. The Crusaders, winners of 20 consecutive games, dropped all the way down to No. 17 in the poll. Saint Louis dropped just one spot in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 to No. 11. Six undefeated teams jumped ahead of Saint Louis, including Pickering Central […]

Win No. 20 in a row not easy for No. 1 Saint Louis

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 22, 2018

Saint Louis managed to survive without its starting quarterback on Friday, although the Crusaders’ 20th consecutive win wasn’t secure until the clock hit :00. With quarterback Jayden de Laura sidelined, the Saint Louis defense helped stake the top-ranked Crusaders to a 23-0 lead on Kapolei in an OIA-ILH Open Division matchup on the West side. But the defending state champions ended up having to sweat out the final seconds before a walk-off sack by Jordan Botelho and Stanley McKenzie finished […]

No. 1 Saint Louis 30, Kapolei 22, FINAL  Onside kick coming and Kapolei recovers at the Saint Louis 45. 0:16 still showing no timeouts for the Hurricanes. First down, incomplete. Looked like they wanted to try a hook and ladder. Clock went down to :03 reset to :10. Rapis is sacked by Jordan Botelho and Stanley McKenzie and that’ll do it. Saint Louis hangs on. On fourth down Rapis goes deep to Sheldon Mcleod who makes the catch for a […]

VIDEO: Saint Louis vs. Punahou highlights

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2018

The best — and closest — Open Division showdown involving defending state champion Saint Louis in the first half of the season was a zany exchange of big plays by Punahou’s offense, defense and special teams with the Crusaders’ uneven defensive performance. Then Crusaders defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele emerged with 9:01 to go in the second quarter, and everything changed. Down 21-14, the Crusaders took command of the line of scrimmage en route to a 35-28 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Kapolei’s Hernandez faces Cal Lee for first time

By Jerry Campany on September 20, 2018

One of six active coaches of at least 20 seasons and with more than 120 career wins, Kapolei’s Darren Hernandez doesn’t experience many firsts these days. Friday night will be an exception. For the first time in his 23 years at Campbell and Kapolei, the Hurricanes head coach will be on the opposite sideline of a Cal Lee-coached Saint Louis squad. The Hurricanes will take their best shot at the No. 1-ranked Crusaders at 7:30 p.m. at their home field. […]

Tuitele sparks Crusaders’ comeback win over Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

On paper, No. 1 Saint Louis secured a hard-earned 35-28 win over No. 3 Punahou on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. In reality, the game turned on the stealth presence and performance of its defense. The injured leader of the ‘D’ didn’t get consistent snaps until halfway through the second quarter. Faatui Tuitele makes that much of a difference, and the Crusaders improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in ILH Open play. Punahou dropped to 3-2 in league play (3-2 overall) […]
