Offer from UNLV makes it 4 for Roosevelt junior DE Kaeo Akana

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2020

UNLV is striking while the iron is hot. Within an hour of getting an oral commit from Punahou defensive back Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen, Rebels assistant coach Chad Kauhaahaa made a scholarship offer to Roosevelt defensive end Kaeo Akana. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior also has offers from Hawaii, Utah and Washington State. He is a dynamic playmaker for Roosevelt, which reached the final of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II playoffs last year. “We connected on social media two weeks ago. We […]

By Nick Abramo on March 5, 2020

OIA and ILH interleague football will continue with a full slate of games to be scheduled for the 2020 season, according to OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka. And two schools — Leilehua and Roosevelt — are moving up a division. “It’s a go,” Tanaka said Thursday morning. The renewal of the highly popular, fan-friendly two-year pilot program was not a given, and multiple sources over the past few months told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that it was possible OIA principals would […]

Roosevelt’s rough road ends at same place

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2019

LAHAINA >> Roosevelt resolved that Lahainaluna would not be the be-all, end-all to its season for a second year in a row. Unfortunately for the Rough Riders, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday night at the Lunas’ Sue D. Cooley Stadium in a 35-0 loss to the three-time defending HHSAA Division II champions. Kui Kahooilihala’s team came in riding high on a 31-7 road win at Kamehameha-Hawaii in the first round. But when the Riders lost fumbles on their first […]

It’s going to be team versus team, a hard battle for both of us.” One day short of exactly one year since a 12-win OIA champion Roosevelt team went over to Maui and got blown out […]

Lahainaluna gets a break before Division II football tournament

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2019

Defending state champion Lahainaluna will await the winner between Roosevelt and Kamehameha-Hawaii to begin its defense in the state Division II football tournament. The Lunas will host the winner of that game on Nov. 23. The Lunas have played a state tournament game at home twice and won both, beating Kaimuki 7-0 in 2015 and Roosevelt 48-10 last year. Kamehameha-Hawaii, which hosts Roosevelt on Nov. 16 for the right to travel to Maui, has not been nearly as successful on […]
