NCAA reverses field on satellite camps

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2016

In a widely-speculated change of direction, the NCAA has removed its potential ban of so-called satellite football camps for high school football players today. See the official announcement on the NCAA’s site here. The proposal to implant a ban was suggested roughly a month ago to the chagrin of players, parents and some college coaches across the country. Last year, the GPA Maximum Exposure Camp at the University of Hawaii was the first locally to permit on-field contact between college […]

Families, campers start petitions vs. NCAA

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2016

Up and down, down and up. The nature of football recruiting in the islands is unique, but when Pac-12 recruiters — and coaches from several other major conferences, plus small colleges and JCs — showed up to a PIAA-hosted combine years ago, it was a boon for local players. However, until last year’s Maximum Exposure Camp at the University of Hawaii campus, there was a drought imposed by the NCAA, prohibiting the presence of college coaches at what has since […]

Volleyball signees dominate letter of intent day

By Paul Honda on April 13, 2016

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Fifty high school seniors declared their future plans by signing letters of intent on Wednesday morning in another pristine and beautiful setting at the Honolulu Elks Lodge in Waikiki. That’s the good news. The bad? This was the final LOI signing event hosted by PIAA, a non-profit organization that will shut its “doors” soon to due a lack of funding. For now, the overflow crowd at the Elks […]
