Tuitele confirms BYU offer

By Paul Honda on June 12, 2016

It’s been just two quick years since Faatui Tuitele was among several eighth-graders to make a splash at a Nike Sparq combine held at Aloha Stadium. “I’m getting older, improving my skills since two years ago. I’m motivated by my coaches, my family,” Tuitele said moments after earning MVP defensive lineman honors at the GPA Football College Showcase on Sunday. That was merely the beginning, a tremor, of things to come. This weekend, BYU became the second FBS school to […]

GPA Football Showcase: Day 3 update

By Paul Honda on June 12, 2016

Another picturesque, sunny morning in Lower Manoa, where the GPA Football College Showcase enters its third and final day. Saturday was a long grind in the heat. This morning’s workout and 1-on-1s is a real test for the best of the best. Being in top condition pays off this morning. More later. GPA Football College Showcase Sunday, June 12 (day 3) Sunday’s itinerary 8:45 a.m. College coaches check in. 9-9:20 a.m. Agilities (Coach Ikei). 9:20-9:25 a.m. Water break. Divide field: […]

GPA Football Showcase: Day 2 recap

By Paul Honda on June 12, 2016

I missed part of the day, but it was a long 6-7 hours of grinding under the sun on an 88-degree day at UH. The GPA Football College Showcase is double in size compared to last year, but it seems like players are getting their share of reps during skills work. During the 1-on-1s and 7-on-7s, as a fan, I wish I could see more snaps for all the players. But it is logistically impossible with nearly 600 players and […]

GPA Football Showcase: Day 1 Recap

By Paul Honda on June 11, 2016

In Friday’s Q&A post with Ikei, he had some sage advice for this year’s campers at the GPA Foootball College Showcase: don’t be afraid to ask questions, introduce yourself to college coaches, jump into line for drills. In some cases, there is no hesitation by players. Alama Uluave, a junior (to be) offensive lineman at Punahou, found that out in his first camp last summer. “It’s competitive. I didn’t realize how much people fight for reps,” said Uluave, younger brother […]

GPA Football Showcase: Day 1 update

By Paul Honda on June 10, 2016

5:45 p.m. The GPA Football College Showcase is underway. It’s been packed here at T.C. Ching Field since I got here around 4 p.m. Registration started at 3 p.m. and Rich Miano says there were players here since 11 a.m. Last year’s Showcase — then known as the Maximum Exposure Camp — drew about 300 players. This year there are 500 and word is they’ve opened it up to 600, all for a chance to show their talents to 80 […]

Q&A: Ikei on GPA Football College Showcase

By Paul Honda on June 10, 2016

In 2015, Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance teamed with Gridiron Performance Academy teamed up to bring local football players and college coaches from across the nation together at the Maximum Exposure Camp. The three-day event was a hit, marking the first time in nearly a decade that college coaches had an opportunity to work with players in a clinic format. It also gave recruiters a chance to work directly with prospects, and many scholarship offers arrived for local players immediately after […]
