Tuileta thrives in any Buffanblu-print

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2013

Ask any QB if he’d rather be a game manager or a playmaker, and the smart ones will say “Yes.” No QB in his right mind assumes that a championship requires the role of only one or the other. Often times, it is both.

Punahou cracks MaxPreps national Fab 50

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2013

For the first time this fall, Punahou has landed in the MaxPreps Fab 50 national rankings released on Tuesday. Coming off a 35-32 win over Saint Louis, the Buffanblu are at No. 50 in the weekly list. Booker T. Washington (Fla.) is ranked No. 1. At 7-0 overall, including a road win over perennial CIF power Helix (Calif.), Punahou moved up one notch in the MaxPreps West Region Top 20 to No. 11. The Buffanblu are right behind Bishop Gorman […]

Video: #1 Punahou vs. #4 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 This started as a defensive duel, a 7-0 game going into the second quarter. Then each offense caught fire. It was a battle on many fronts. Punahou quarterback Larry Tuileta took his share of sacks, but the risk-reward paid off. Saint Louis quarterback Ryder Kuhns delivered big, too, finding his deep threats. In the end, Punahou’s ground game, with that unique mix of three-back sets, trumped all. It was their closest margin of victory […]

Buffanblu up to No. 12 in West

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2013

Punahou’s football team is up to No. 12, rising two spots in the weekly Student Sports West Region Top 10 released earlier in the week. Punahou, 6-0 entering this weekend’s matchup with Saint Louis, was 14th last week. The Buffanblu leaped ahead of Hamilton (Ariz.) and Vista Murrieta (Calif.). De La Salle remained the No. 1 team in the region. Punahou edged Saint Louis 35-32 on Friday to improve to 7-0 overall. The West’s top team, De La Salle (Calif.) […]

Update: Punahou 35, Saint Louis 32, final

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2013

First quarter Buffanblu’s first play from scrimmage is a deep post to Kanawai Noa, incomplete. But he was open. He got behind the Crusaders. Saint Louis did the same with Ryder Kuhns going deep to Drew Kobayashi on a pass that was just a bit long and off his fingertips. 6:30 – Larry Tuileta finds Micah Ma‘a for a 23-yard touchdown pass on third down. Punahou 7, Saint Louis 0. Second quarter 10:43 – Busted coverage allows tight end Spencer […]

No. 1 Punahou, No. 4 Saint Louis collide

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2013

No. 1 Punahou can make things easy by taking care of business Friday night at Aloha Stadium against No. 4 Saint Louis. The Crusaders can really mess things up with a win of their own. Assuming neither team slips up in its final regular-season game against Division II teams, Friday night’s tilt will determine how the ILH Division I playoff bracket will look. For Punahou (6-0, 4-0), the two-time defending ILH champion, it’s simple: Win, and you’re at home resting […]

No. 1 Punahou plays ‘Iolani at right time

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2013

Not that No. 1 Punahou needs help or anything, but the Buffanblu are getting to play ‘Iolani at the right time on Saturday. The unranked Raiders (4-3, 2-2 ILH) will likely be without the services of sophomore running back Jordan Ross as they try to snap a three-game losing streak to the visiting Buffanblu (5-0, 3-0). Ross, who has rushed for 658 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games, injured his left ankle in the second quarter of a 19-3 […]
