By Paul Honda on December 17, 2020

In late July, Kahanu Kia and his father, Nate, made the voyage of a lifetime. After playing in the PTP National College Showcase in Utah, they journeyed across the continent and visited campuses. The Punahou senior didn’t make it to all 15 universities that offered him football scholarships. But he and his dad made sure Notre Dame was on the itinerary. On Wednesday, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker became the latest island football product to join the Fighting Irish, signing his […]

I couldn’t be happier,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound wide receiver said. Paige turned down offers and opportunities from seven other programs: Air Force, […]

The Tigers also noticed Paige’s skill and speed on the gridiron and offered him a roster spot on Tuesday. Princeton and all Ivy League football programs do not offer athletic scholarships, but the financial package for athletes works out well. “It’s a great school. They have a great computer science program. I think they’ve been ranked […]

Punahou was on Maui preparing to play Baldwin when word of the attack caused the game to be canceled. Saint Louis won […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Tom Carpenter and Punahou make Roosevelt pay

By Jerry Campany on October 26, 2020

You probably could hear the collective gasp in the press box by Hawaii scribes Joe Anzivino and Bill Kim. On this date in 1945, Roosevelt coach Neil “Cocky” Donahue spit in the face of conventional wisdom and ordered his quarterback to throw the ball despite a 13-7 lead with less than five minutes to play. Both sportswriters blasted the decision after Peter Wilson picked off Roy Rosa‘s pass to give the Buffanblu the ball at Roosevelt’s 11-yard line. Wilson scored […]

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2020

The numbers seem almost pedestrian now, but on this date in 1993 Punahou triggerman Makaena Puli broke the ILH single-game passing record with 426 yards in a 46-21 win over Damien at Aloha Stadium. Puli broke the record held by Iolani’s Paul Ah Yat, who had 350 in 1989. His five touchdown passes tied a league record shared by Garrett Gabriel, John Hao and Joel Lane.
