VIDEO: HHSAA presser: Ane, York

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2014

These press conferences are great for media in one sense: everybody gets a chance to talk to the high school coach of their choice. Of course, we’re talking coaches of teams that have made it this far. The first presser comes before the opening round of the state tourney. That’s borderline madhouse since there are six teams in Division I and six teams in D-II, and tracking down all 12 coaches is nearly impossible in a limited amount of time. […]

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2014

Punahou, ranked No. 21 last week, was dropped from the CBS MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings on Monday. Punahou (8-0) edged Kahuku 13-10 in the state semifinals on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. MaxPreps’ computerized rankings has the Buffanblu at No. 19 as of Monday. The same computer ratings list has Mililani (12-0) at No. 28. Punahou and Mililani meet for the Division I state championship on Friday at Aloha Stadium. Kahuku, which lost to Punahou 13-10 in the semifinals, is […]

Punahou survives an emotional affair

By Billy Hull on November 16, 2014

Walking onto the Aloha Stadium field mere seconds after Kanawai Noa‘s interception sealed Punahou’s 13-10 win over Kahuku in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships on Saturday night, it immediately became apparent this wasn’t your typical high school football game. Emotions, as they always do, filled both sidelines. The thrill of victory on the Punahou side after Jet Toner‘s game-winning 48-yard field goal was easy to see. Dejection on the faces of Kahuku’s players after it nearly pulled off […]

Toner’s field goals slingshot Punahou

By Nick Abramo on November 15, 2014

Jet Toner’s 48-yard field goal sailed through the middle of the uprights, catapulting him into Hawaii high school football lore. The winning boot with 30 seconds left along with his tying 35-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter gave No. 1 Punahou a dramatic 13-10 victory over No. 2 Kahuku in the state Division I semifinals at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night. “It was just like every other rep we’ve had,” Toner said a minute after Kanawai Noa’s interception with the […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Kaumatule vs. Tualau

By Billy Hull on November 15, 2014

It’s time for the main event at Aloha Stadium as No. 1 Kahuku takes on the school with the most state championships ever in Kahuku. This Trench Warfare will focus on recent Oregon commit Canton Kaumatule (6-7, 290) going up against Kahuku’s Victor Tualau (6-2, 340). Full disclosure, I actually have to write the game story for this so I can only do one TW matchup and I might be a little slow with it. I will try my best. […]

Countdown to kickoff: Kahuku vs. Punahou

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2014

A shorter version of this story appears in Saturday’s Star-Advertiser One team is seemingly omnipotent, a Galactus that consumes opposing teams, a squad with massive numbers despite a light number of games played. The other team has learned how to survive the gauntlet and reach the semifinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Championships despite key injuries. It’s Punahou and Kahuku, and in a rare occasion, it will be the Red Raiders who are the underdog. No. […]

Coming Soon: TRENCH WARFARE

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2014

Punahou loose, focused, hungry

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

TThe campus is bustling, as always, at Punahou School. Things can get hectic between classrooms, homework and practice. The Buffanblu football team finds good use for little breaks here and there. With practice still a few minutes from starting, they got on the field and had some nice, loud fun kicking a soccer ball into a goal. By 4 p.m. sharp, they were running from sideline to sideline. It was just helmets and pads on this Wednesday afternoon, but work […]
