Kahuku unveils new look under Leslie

Down the freeway at Moanalua, the Kahuku Red Raiders happy to get some contact against another team for the first time this summer. New coach Lee Leslie made his debut, far from happy about the start of the afternoon — only one of the two scheduled buses showed up at Kahuku. Beautiful morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki on signing day for dozens of student-athletes from the islands. Among them were a handful of football players, including Punahou’s all-state offensive lineman, Davis Miyashiro-Saipa‘ia. The senior signed with Oregon as a preferred walk-on, turning down several opportunities at smaller schools. Isaac Hurd, Campbell’s big-play quarterback, signed with Southern Oregon. The Falcons were on the mainland for the first time in recent memory after a busy offseason of fundraising by the team and coaching staff. Coach Nathan Davis’ team posted a win over Orange on Friday. Punahou wins title in California

The Punahou Buffanblu defeated Poway 59-52 on Monday to capture the Under Armour Holiday Classic Governor’s Division championship. Punahou won four games in five days, getting a boost from fellow islanders in the title matchup. “Hilo helped us so much,” assistant coach Robert Shklov said, referring to the Hilo High squad that played in the same tourney, different division. “They cheered so hard for us. Govs in Mokuleia: A final visit

The Ortiz ohana requested that the Farrington Governors football team come to Mokuleia one last time, so coach Randall Okimoto and his squad made the trek on Tuesday. The Govs had been to the beach where Dayne Ortiz suddenly disappeared, lost in the sea. They were there on Sunday and Monday as search crews worked valiantly. The vigil for Dayne Ortiz at Farrington High School on Monday night drew about 1,000. Our staff at the Star-Advertiser covered it. Here is a photo gallery by photographer Bruce Asato.
