LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis at Mililani

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2014

5:30 p.m. JV game is entering the fourth quarter. Saint Louis leads Mililani 18-14. It’s a beautiful, sunny, breezy afternoon at John Kauinana Stadium. The kind of day that makes me feel grateful to be alive and enjoying another great high school game. Still thinking about Kapolei and the loss of a player’s dad at the Kahuku game last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the young man, his family and the Hurricane ohana. The varsity game here is […]

LIVE BLOG: Kapolei at Kahuku

By Paul Honda on August 15, 2014

6:45 p.m. I’m going to attempt keeping statistics, shooting video and live blogging for the varsity game. Please forgive if I don’t blog immediately. I’m going to try anyway. As you can see (photos below), they’ve spruced up the facility here at Carleton Weimer Field. The field is lush and marked for every yard, the first time I can remember. There are, as Red Raiders coach Lee Leslie promised, 36 flags at the top of the bleachers. It’s rare to […]

Buffanblu don’t miss a beat

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

Farrington looks quite crisp considering it’s just one week into preseason. Two scrimmages in — against ILH powerhouses Kamehameha and Punahou, no less — and it is clear the Governors are bent on expanding their offensive menu. Often, they’ve lined up in the spread to give Montana Liana more options in the aerial game. But they’ve also lined up in slot-I (or I-slot, whichever tickles your fancy) sets and gashed for yardage inside, too. This morning at Alexander Field, new […]

Kahuku unveils new look under Leslie

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

Down the freeway at Moanalua, the Kahuku Red Raiders happy to get some contact against another team for the first time this summer. New coach Lee Leslie made his debut, far from happy about the start of the afternoon — only one of the two scheduled buses showed up at Kahuku. Players split up and eventually made it to Moanalua late. The scrimmage, which began hot with a touchdown by each team’s offense, finally began around 5:30 p.m. That was […]

PIAA Letter of Intent signing day

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2014

Beautiful morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki on signing day for dozens of student-athletes from the islands. Among them were a handful of football players, including Punahou’s all-state offensive lineman, Davis Miyashiro-Saipa‘ia. The senior signed with Oregon as a preferred walk-on, turning down several opportunities at smaller schools. Isaac Hurd, Campbell’s big-play quarterback, signed with Southern Oregon. Among the other notable signees are Sarah Liva, Mililani’s all-state basketball player, who signed with Portland State. Punahou’s three-sport standout, Keau Fey, […]
