Paddlers Could Soon See New Sand

By Kyle Galdeira on February 19, 2015

Keehi Lagoon has become one of Oahu’s most heavily-used venues for participants, coaches and onlookers engaging in the state sport of outrigger canoe paddling. However, while the lagoon’s waters provide a fair, flat race course, the site has been devoid of a true sandy shore for years and the safety of those using the site has come into question. If a new bill making its way through the state legislature becomes law, the lagoon’s beach park will be replenished with […]

Punahou sweeps state paddling

By Kyle Galdeira on February 8, 2015

As Punahou wrapped up its stellar sweep of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Canoe Paddling Championships in the wind-whipped waters of Maui’s Kahului Harbor Saturday afternoon, Kamehameha-Maui athletics director Blane Gaison said calmly “Give ‘em a broom.” The former Kamehameha-Kapalama athletics director, pro football player and current canoe paddling enthusiast has become familiar with watching the Buffanblu excel at the state level in Hawaii’s state sport dating back to 2002 when the state competition was sanctioned. So, too, has the […]

Kamehameha paddlers will be tested again

By Jerry Campany on February 6, 2015

Kamehameha-Kapalama has pretty much dominated state canoe paddling since its inception in 2002, but there is still one thing left to accomplish that nobody has done before. The boys crew will be going for its third straight title, it has won back-to-back three times but never completed a three-peat. The ILH champions go in knowing that the ILH has won the race in each of the last five years. The First Hawaiian Bank Canoe Paddling Championships are scheduled for Saturday […]

Kaiser paddlers maintain winning ways

By Kyle Galdeira on January 24, 2015

It appears as though the Kaiser outrigger canoe paddling program has gotten the hang of winning on the water. In the first 13 seasons of the Oahu Interscholastic Association including paddling as a sanctioned sport, the Cougars came up short of winning any championship hardware. However, over the last two seasons, Kaiser has rallied to win three paddling titles including the boys and mixed titles during Saturday’s OIA championship regatta at Keehi Lagoon. With the addition of the brand-new hardware, […]

Kalaheo paddlers going for it all

By Kyle Galdeira on January 23, 2015

As their brethren on the boys basketball team currently occupies the top spot in the Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 poll of media and coaches, Kalaheo’s paddlers carry some extra motivation to match—or surpass—the success of their hardcourt cohorts in pursuit of state championship gold early next month. However, before the Mustangs chase their first state boys paddling crown since 2008, the experienced crew will attempt to claim its fifth consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association title Saturday afternoon in the league championship regatta […]

Spikers lead LOI fall signing class

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

A dozen volleyball players were among nearly three dozen student-athletes who signed their letters of intent early Wednesday morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki. The event, hosted each signing season by Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance (PIAA), featured a multitude of sports for the fall signing period. The 12 volleyball players include UH signee McKenna Granato, who sparked Punahou to the state championship last week. Ten of the 12 spikers are heading to the mainland, including Kamehameha teammates Tiyana Hallums […]

Punahou paddlers stick together

By Kyle Galdeira on January 19, 2014

In the span of roughly eight hours, the state prep canoe paddling picture became much clearer. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu held its sixth and final event of the campaign at Ala Moana Beach Park Saturday morning, while later in the day, the Oahu Interscholastic Association ran its season-ending championship regatta at Keehi Lagoon. The top three teams from the ILH’s boys and mixed (three boys and three girls) divisions earned berths into the Feb. 1 First Hawaiian Bank state […]
