By Billy Hull on November 23, 2013

2013 team page for D-I state champion Punahou There’s only one thing left for Punahou senior Larry Tuileta to accomplish in his high school career. The Buffanblu quarterback gets his final chance to win a state championship in tonight’s Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium against Mililani. This is the third straight final for Punahou, which lost to Kahuku each of the last two seasons. Mililani is trying for its first-ever state […]

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 This time, it was all Trojans. When Mililani and Campbell met in the regular season, Campbell led 21-7 at the half before the Trojans rallied for a 42-21 win. In the state semifinals, Mililani dominated the line of scrimmage and didn’t give Campbell’s outstanding quarterback, Isaac Hurd, much time to throw the ball. Hurd only broke away once, a 31-yard touchdown run late in the game.

Mililani’s defense showed Milton tough love

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 22, 2013

Rod York knew it was a risk. But one he deemed worth taking. While breaking in new candidates for Mililani’s starting quarterback job this summer, York unleashed the Trojans senior-heavy defense in practice. “In the beginning (the quarterbacks) were live,” York said. “Some coaches were like, ‘what are you doing?’ But we needed all the experience we can get. “So I gambled, and said go ahead and tackle him because he needed the experience. The fastest way you’re going to […]

Punahou bulks up since win over Mililani

By Jerry Campany on November 22, 2013

Give Mililani a little assist for helping Punahou into its third straight state championship game. The Trojans had their way with Punahou’s offensive line in the Buffanblu’s 24-14 win at Mililani early in the season, specifically defensive end Kelii Padello. All Padello did was torch both of Punahou’s tackles for four sacks and keep pressure on Punahou quarterback Larry Tuileta throughout. Punahou went to work immediately after the win, moving Semisi Uluave from tackle to guard and putting Davis Miyashiro-Saipa’ia […]

Mililani’s bodyguards come ready to work

By Jerry Campany on November 21, 2013

If any unit on the Mililani football team represents a lunch pail mentality, it is the offensive line. While the quarterbacks and receivers played catch and the defense messed around punting the ball back and forth to each other 15 minutes before practice began on Wednesday, each member of the offensive line already had his helmet on and was making good use of it. The big boys up front warmed up for practice running plays and knocking each other around. […]

Punahou has practice perfected

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 21, 2013

Punahou has had a lot of practice at … well … practicing. After completing the ILH regular season on Oct. 11, the Buffanblu had a bye for the first round of the Division I playoffs. Following a win over Kamehameha on Oct. 25 to clinch the ILH title and the league’s state tournament berth, they went close to three weeks before playing Farrington last Friday in a Division I semifinal of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football Championship. While playing two […]
