Only two athletes ran the 40-yard dash in an electronically-timed 4.4 seconds at the Polynesian Bowl Combine last weekend. One of them was Mililani wide receiver Gavin Hunter, who later finished the seven-hour event with co-MVP honors at his position. “I’m feeling good right now. We were with Coach Galu (Tagovailoa) getting that morning session,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior said. It was scorching hot at Skippa Diaz Stadium in the morning. Afternoon trade winds soothed the 50-plus pass catchers as […]

By Paul Honda on July 11, 2021

Freshman year for most student-athletes is a time of foundational work. Getting acclimated. Learning the ropes. For Kanoa Ferreira, it was a bit more than that. Ferreira was selected as one of the top five receivers at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday at Skippa Diaz Stadium, a rare feat for a playmaker this young. The other selections at WR were Keawe Andres of Leilehua, Gavin Hunter of Mililani, Kaden Baptista (Villa Park, Konawaena) and Joshua Gleason of Pearl City. […]

Mill Vill mantra: ‘Humility, unconditional love form unbreakable bond’

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2021

After some hesitation, Mililani/Mill Ville football coach Rod York shared his thoughts about the why of his mission. The longtime varsity head coach opened the Mill Vill JPS squad for high schoolers , middle schoolers and elementary-age flag football players several years ago. Essentially, as a coach, it is volunteer work. The hours. The sweat. Contemporaries like Saint Louis coach Ron Lee support York’s mission, but there are some detractors who question York’s intent. Even after all these years. “I’m […]

He picked up his dad’s guitar and within a moment, Sione Tavo Motuapuaka felt home again. “I rarely watch TV and movies,” the 6-foot-5, 280-pound Mililani junior said. “Usually on my free time, I’ll be trying to learn a new instrument or learn new songs on the ukulele or guitar.” Moana Motuapuaka was a musician at the Hawaiian Hut back in the day, performing for more than two decades. That career led to his wife, Lisa, and two children who […]

The Campbell freshman overcame the obstacles, even moving from slot receiver to running back, to earn John Madden MVP honors as the Blue squad outlasted the Grey, 12-6, in the Bret Cooper Junior Academic All-American Bowl at DeSoto High School. Hallums rushed for 80 yards as both offenses struggled in the wind and rain before the contest was called […]
