Waianae scored 90 without running up score

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 6, 2015

A perfect storm produced an outcome that figures to resonate beyond Saturday’s round up of high school football scores. Facing an overmatched McKinley team, Waianae stayed on the ground to generate 453 yards in a record-breaking 90-0 win at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The Seariders stayed relatively basic in the running game, didn’t attempt a pass and played their entire roster by the end of the second quarter in the OIA Red game. Ten Waianae players had carries in the […]

The night McKinley beat Waianae

By Jerry Campany on September 4, 2015

McKinley will show up on Saturday like it always does, lining up against Waianae and hoping for a miracle. It is not as far-fetched a thought as it would appear, a lot of football depends on how the ball bounces. The Seariders have lost to the Tigers only once since 1973, going 10-1, but that one loss might be a clue on how to accomplish the impossible. McKinley ended Waianae’s season in shocking fashion way back in 2002 by a […]

Tigers showed off the pride of McKinley

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2015

Yeah, yeah, you could say McKinley sucks, but it wouldn’t be true. The Tigers came, they saw and they got blitzed. They left the North Shore on Friday night with their heads held high. No complaining. They played out of their league, so to speak, and paid the price. Kahuku beat them 78-0. But remember, the scoreboard is only one thing. The fans never gave up. Aside from a few plays where they looked a bit befuddled, the Tigers players […]

New McKinley football coach full of zeal

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2015

While being interviewed for a Honolulu Star-Advertiser story that announced his hiring as the new McKinley football coach, Sam Cantiberos used a word that captures his essence. “Infectious.” Cantiberos was referring to what he’d like the McKinley football program to be — so positive and uplifting that “people want to hop on board.” Well, Cantiberos, 38, can tell you a thing or two about infectiousness. He is four years removed from chasing his biggest dream, a dream that got away. […]

McKinley gets softball stadium; football next

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2015

McKinley’s new multi-million dollar softball stadium is ready for use, and a new football field ringed by an eight-lane track is next on the list. The softball stadium, which had been delayed several times for various reasons, will host the OIA championship tournament in April as well as the early rounds of the state tournament in May, according to McKinley athletic director Bob Morikuni. Plans are for the state Department of Education to break ground for the new football field […]

By Billy Hull on August 29, 2014

The third-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders are rolling under first-year coach Lee Leslie. After an impressive 33-19 win over a tough Kapolei squad in the opener, Kahuku rolled Waipahu 51-10 last week. The Red Raiders have won four in a row against the Tiges since McKinley beat the Red Raiders 14-13 in 2006. McKinley put up 28 points against Kahuku last season but was held to seven in its first game against Leilehua. The Tigers had to forfeit their season opener […]

May the man for Campbell

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2013

In many ways, running back Austin May is the forgotten man in Campbell’s pass-happy offense. But McKinley might never forget him after the Sabers beat the Tigers 40-13 at Campbell in the OIA Red quarterfinals on Friday night. May, the fifth-leading rusher in the seven-team OIA Red West, was overshadowed all season by quarterback Isaac Hurd and his fleet bunch of receivers despite his 330 yards and 5.8 per carry. Whenever Campbell needed a yard or two, Hurd would go […]
