Update: Kahuku 44, McKinley 28, final

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2013

7:43 p.m. The game is just underway. Look for Brian McInnis’ game story in tomorrow’s Star-Advertiser. Kahuku received the opening kickoff and is driving. Ball at the Tigers’ 39-yard line. 9:51 p.m. Injury time out for McKinley’s Pono Kini. He returned a punt partially blocked by Tyrell Tuiasosopo down the sideline to the 11-yard line. Looks like an ankle injury. He was down twice earlier for an injury to his arm or shoulder. Tough kid. First time in a long […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]

Makekau makes good on start

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2013

Senior Brandon “Pono” Makekau rewarded his coach’s faith with some memorable moments on Friday night. The Castle quarterback made good on his first start of the season with 21-for-28 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns (both to Ikaika Urasaki) and no interceptions in about 2 1/2 quarters of work in a key 21-7 win over McKinley. The 5-foot-10 Makekau led the Knights in passing three times as a junior in 2012, so he wasn’t totally unfamiliar with the role. […]

McKinley players show their versatility

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 31, 2013

McKinley is off to its best start in more than a decade, thanks in large part to the Tigers’ versatility. Several of the Tigers’ playmakers do double (or triple) duty, and McKinley improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in OIA Red East play with a 35-0 win over Kaimuki on Saturday. McKinley last went 3-1 to start a season in 2002, when quarterback Abel Werner led the Tigers to the state tournament semifinals. McKinley’s run that season finally ended in […]

McKinley Tigers feature one wild cat

By Jerry Campany on August 16, 2013

The excitement is back in McKinley. It might not add up to more wins, but it makes every minute the Tigers are on offense a chance to see something special. Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper took over for Marcus Aikau in the second half of Friday night’s loss to Kapolei. He led the team to its only score and had the Hurricanes wondering what is coming next. He is a one-man wildcat offense, whether he means to be or not. Kalahiki-Gasper started last […]

Football Photo Tour: Day 1 – Leilehua, McKinley

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2013

Day 1, Pupule Paul’s prep football photo tour commences Tour stop: Saturday, Aug. 27, 2013 It happens. The e-mail comes in. The photo tour schedule, organized by the venerable Eli Kapu, is released. Load the tank with gas and hit the road. In the “old” days, the 1990s, I’d circle the Big Island with photographers like Baron Sekiya to get preview stories and art for West Hawaii Today’s annual football tabloid. Nothing like a car wreck on the mauka highway […]
