Mistakes haunt Kapolei

By Billy Hull on October 19, 2013

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said the same thing four different times after Friday night’s 17-10 loss to Farrington in the OIA Red playoffs. “This one hurts,” he repeated again and again. How could it not? Kapolei’s 0-4 record all-time against Farrington was well documented heading into Friday night’s quarterfinal matchup. Neither team led by more than four points until Farrington quarterback Montana Liana threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Baguio to break the hearts of the Kapolei faithful. The […]

Kapolei can catch it

By Jerry Campany on October 12, 2013

Kapolei can run the ball, that is no secret. But heading into its playoff game against Farrington, it showed it can throw it a little bit, too. Quarterback Aizon Kahana passed for 203 yards in the Hurricanes’ 42-27 win over Kailua in the first round of the OIA playoffs on Friday, just his second game with more than 200 yards passing this season. That he did it is enough to make Governors coach Randall Okimoto sit up and take notice. […]

Kapolei charges back but falls just short

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 29, 2013

Two weeks after rallying past Leilehua, Kapolei nearly pulled off another remarkable comeback Friday night against Waianae. After falling behind by 22 at halftime and again in the third quarter, the Hurricanes made it a one-possession game midway through the fourth period. But the Kapolei offense wouldn’t get another chance to touch the ball again as Waianae managed to run out the clock for a 35-27 win. After seeing a chance to move into second place in the OIA Red […]

Kapolei, Waianae have a lot to play for

By Billy Hull on September 26, 2013

When No. 8 Kapolei meets No. 6 Waianae on Friday night at Raymond Torii Field, there won’t be any kind of special trophy on the line. That doesn’t mean the two schools haven’t developed a little bit of a rivalry. Waianae is 8-4 against Kapolei since the Hurricanes fielded their first football team in 2002. Playing in the OIA White Division its first two seasons, Kapolei took on Waianae in the preseason both years, splitting the two meetings. In fact, […]

Pupule’s ballot: Voters catching up to Pupule

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2013

Mililani is moving up in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, which means I’m ahead of the curve or just prophetic. Or just lucky. After all, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Polls, of course, are not about predictions. Mililani simply looked to me like the second-best team in the state for some time — since Kamehameha’s loss to Punahou, to be precise. Didn’t really seem that way, though, while the Trojans were down 21-7 to Campbell at […]
